They're really unusual, you can tell by their build and lack of muscle mass that they're desert dogs.

I could never own one, though. I don't like my dogs to look emaciated.

They may even be the ancestors of breeds like the Greyhound, Saluki and some of the other fleet hounds. Beautiful creatures . . . but you would have trouble not wanting to feed them all the time to try to put a little more muscle on those frames!

Yes, they do look really emaciated! I saw even skinnier ones! Think of the rude comments you'd get from people walking one of those down the street.

ROFL!

I even get comments on my Border Collie when people pet him, because they can feel his backbone easily.. Er, it's normal due to their structure, but try convincing them that you're not starving your dog!

Honestly I think I'd feed an Azawakh to the point of obesity. My Papillon has more muscle mass than those guys do.

i have to admit those in that link gaddy, look sick (yeah skinny but even overlooking that they just dont look happy)
i do however think there a beautiful breed, and very much the way they were origionally bred, they look like the ancient breed that was bred for speed in the desert...
i would want to feed it a little more though...still be skinny like there supposed to but i dunt like seeing the ribs... id be tempted to give em greyhound muscle lol.
very elegant though!

They are a sight hound, greyhounds and whippets have a similar body type. But I agree it doesn't look very nice, if I had one I would definatly feed it enough so that it's ribs wouldn't stick out so bad.

Greyhounds have a similar body type, BUT they don't look they're starved. I believe you're supposed to see the last three ribs just a tad in Greys.

I agree that some might be underfed because there is a few I saw that look a lot skinnier than the others. Hmm.. I should look at their standard and see if it says anything about the ribs like you say about the Greyhound..

BODY

Topline Nearly straight, horizontal or rising towards the hips
Withers Quite prominent.
Loin: Short, lean and often slightly arched.
Hipbones Distinctly protruding and always placed at an equal or superior height to the height of the withers.
Croup : Oblique without accentuated slant.
Forechest: Not very wide.
Chest: Well developed in length, deep but without reaching elbow level. It is not very wide but must have enough space for the heart, so, the sternal region of the chest must not abruptly become narrow.
Ribs: Long, visible, slightly and evenly curved down to the sternum.
Underline The sternal arch is accentuated and joined without abruptness to the belly which tucked up very high below the lumbar arch.
Tail : Set low, long, thin, lean and tapered. Is covered with the same type of hair as that of the body and has a white brush at its extremity. Is carried hanging with the tip slightly raised, but when the dog is excited, it can be carried above the horizontal.
Well that's all I can find about the ribs.
