Some of them have pictures in addition to the instructions on how to do the exercises. In my experience, crunches work but can hurt your back if your not careful (or using a machine).
A gym membership (Gold's or Better Bodies) is a great start. They usually have personal trainers that will give you a workout tailored to your needs and desires (without charging because they are only writing it down for you and showing which machines and exercises to do...not "coaching" you).
