Hey,
I have had this now 11 month old dane female for about a month. She was kind of a rescue. Family with small child. Wife went back to work. Dane in small pen. Fortunately they had enough sense to know that was no life for this lovely dog. So she is with me now.

Here is my question.... Keira follows us around constantly seeking attention at every opportunity. She tries to jump in front of the other dogs when we pet or play with them. She chases my sox in the morning when I am putting them on. She is trying to nibble my hands right now as I type. She is getting much better behaved all in all, but I wonder about the constant attention seeking. Is it normal for her age? If not, how do I let her know she is with us for good and will never be kept away from her pack again?

thanks,

shirley

I could be wrong and maybe each dane is different, but they tend to be very people oriented. They LOVE to be around their people at all times.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I've only done research myself.

im currently looking at danes as a possibility for the future big dog in my life and danes are most definatly people dogs, they will follow you round try and be with you 24/7...

see the way i figure it i want my chis, who are huge dogs in tiny bodied and my ig gentle giant, who is infact a lap dog in a huge body...

danes are definatly LAP dogs in big bodies...dont be suprised if she tries to sit in your lap sleep in your bed or climb in the shower with you!

Danes are very people oriented, they want to be with you at all times. I wouldn't call them needy, but Velcro dogs. They do love attention and are very protective, even-though they are gentle giants. She will probably stand between you and any one that comes to your door, or is visiting. It is their nature.

I loved my Danes, they were wonderful dogs. Smart, loving, and loyal to the very end. I love to watch them run...absolutely beautiful.

One thing about a Dane...you really need to get close to your dog and learn how to read her.

These dogs have an extremely high tolerance to pain. If they are hurt or sick they will never whine and let you know. You have to know how to read them to get them to a vet, often in time to save their life. When Duke's stomach bloated and twisted he never whined, he did vomit in the back yard but I could tell by the look in his eye it was more than just an upset stomach. Knowing how to read him...saved his life.

My Fila is bumping my elbow as I am trying to type this... just part of having Velcro dogs.

Thanks so much for the information. My sister has had Danes for the last 30 or so years, but they are deep country outside dogs with the people bond mostly satisfied by riding with husband around ranch and 2 very rough and tumble children (and now grandchildren). Her dogs seem to train each other and to know without prompting not to knock the kids down and drag them about the yard (oh, yeah, they do that) when they are in their church clothes.
My dog past is populated mostly with guard dog breeds. Lacie, my mastiff/rotty mix who passed away this week from a stroke (sadness) would certainly get in bed or on the couch with me, but spent most of her time watching over the family (dogs, cats, kids) and protecting whomever might need it with dignity and grace. My husband called her his quiet girl.
This wondrous Dane pup bounds about with goofy enthusiasm. She steps on the other dogs, chases the cats, and loves us with a fierce abandon that is amazing to me since she has only been here about a month. Velcro dog...yep. Excellent description.

Princess, they are definitely velcro dogs, but in a good way. I have always refered to my danes as "shadows". They're always there. I have had one or two in the past that were content to go off in the other room and have quiet time, but for the most part, where you are, is where they wanna be. This is why they are not good outside dogs.

If you click on the link in my signature, you can learn more about danes and what it's like to own them.
