Why do you always state that you "Are stating your opinion, which you are entitled to" on every thread where people don't agree with you?

Is it like, some sort of defense mechanism?

I want to know in who's world why this child should not be blamed for this crime. Unless he is severely mentally handicapped, blanked out and did it, or some other bizarre twist you can come up with. He shouldn't be put in jail, but he should have to attend counseling, along with his parents.
Because I think some people forget what an opinion is. This was in reference to one member here. Not all of you.

Ms Merico over here has gotten down right nasty which I think is uncalled for.

Again you are missing what I have said. Did I not state that he is WRONG and needs to suffer the consequences? Yes I did.

Jail = YES. They have jails for those that need mental help. Sorry... but I dont think a quick bandaid fix will cure it.

Sorry you got your panties in a twist. ;)
And it depends... are they the red and black tiger striped ones? Though usually I walk around naked... But that's not my fault.. it's that wayside bum I mentioned before. He likes the tiger striped ones :D

I guess I am just speaking from personal experience here because I used to go out and kill snakes for fun and cut the unborn babies from their stomachs. And I turned out fine. I was 5 and 6. Now that I think back am like OMG how awful, but at the time I did not see the big deal.

I say OMG how awful, too. Mericox has certainly not posted anything as nasty as that.

I think sending a 7 year old in jail is sooo very harsh when a situation can be fixed by better parenting and therapy if needed. I think jail would make this little boy WORSE. Jail is to teach people a lesson for their crimes. Therapy is to help fix troubled people.

Yes it was awful. All the kids in my family did things like that. We lived on a farm. It was not an unusual thing. Just like hunting was not unusual. Its all in how you are raised. And I am going to ignore your second comment because it makes no sense.

I don't know.....I have met some kids that age that were JUST like their parents. Kids copycat what they see. A neighbor comes to mind. He is a sport hunter. I have never met someone so into killing animals just for their horns than him. He traps wild critters just to kill. Newsflash, don't move out to BFE if you don't like critters being all around you. He is also a chicken fighter and dog killer.....

His kids are carbon copies of him. They thought watching a deer be put out of it's misery should have been on Americas Funniest Videos. Disgusting little children that act just like their father.

Anyways, my point is that sometimes kids DO do things because of their parenting. Not sure what the case is here but I hope somehow it gets under control. I don't care WHY he did it as much as I care that he reallly learns his lesson.

And Reggin, I think what the difference is here is that this kid went out of his way, big time, to kill these animals. He wasn't just messing around with his buddies, he BROKE into a Zoo and did some pretty horrible things. I have met alot of people though that admit as kids they killed small animals, but certainly not how this crime has been reported. They regret it now but it's a sad fact.

I don't think jail or juvie is the right answer, but I tihnk that generic 'therapy' doesn't go far enough- kiddo needs to be in serious treatemnt, whether that's inpatient ro day treatment somewhere, and getting SERIOUS help from professionals, and his parents need to ge ta clue, either in managing their kiddo with organic mental illness or in not encouaging bad behavior.

I think that is WAY over the top. That 7 year old doesn't deserve to be in jail. Not for something like that. I used to kill snakes when I was a kid and so did my fiance. Graduating to people? I dont see it. Assuming that he is just a normal kid that likes to kill things. Thats nothing new, but then again I've been around little boys.

No, he doesn't deserve to be in jail, but make no mistake, he DOES need help.
And, yes, he very well could graduate to people IF he doesn't get help.
Normal kids don't like to just kill things. Not like THAT.
Did you and your fiancee break into a reptile house with the intent to go on a reptile killing spree? Would you have if you were given the opportunity?
I know I don't know you, so I cannot really say, but I highly doubt you would have.

I, too, hold the parent responsible for the child being gone long enough to do damage like that, period.
And I, too, think that the parents should go into therapy of sorts.

I grew up with four brothers, and I can tell you, NONE of them just killed things to just kill things.

This was what I was trying to say here. We dont know his parents. We dont know how they lived and what they have taught or did not teach their child. All children are different depending on how they are raised. Not that they are just psychopathic. This was my very point.

Yes, he did break in and as a kid I would never even think about doing something like that. Very bold indeed and he did know it was wrong. Thats why I think a therapist does need to asses this situation, because SOMETHING needs to be done and just sending this kid to jail is NOT going to fix the problem and I think it is foolish to think so.

You are missing my quote there, dear reggin.

And I do think he needs more than just therapy.. a few days/weeks/months might do it. :)

Speaking from watching the story of Jeffrey Dahmer, yes it has happened before where a child grew up and went on to killing people. We all know he was definitely wrong in the head. It could be possible in this case, but I think a lot of things about his personal life needs to come to light before assuming so.

Like I said before, trying to teach him a lesson with jail will make this child worse. Jail is no place for a 7 year old to be even with the awful things he did. I just think its so wrong.

Now that I think about breaking into a zoo. Doing something that outrageous. It just seems to me that this child probably has a history of getting away with things. I know my parents would whoop my ass for attempting to break into ANYTHING. Lack of discipline maybe? It sure sounds like that could be the case.

ALSO, normal kids do NOT like to kill things. Killing things is a sure sign of mental disturbia (not a real term, but I can't figure out what the right one would be...), and hey, that can COME from terrible parenting.

I'm not saying that all kids who kill things grow up to kill people, but it's certainly NOT "normal" OR right.
I definitely agree. It is not normal to just go around killing animals for fun no matter your age. I really find it sick that people would seem to dismiss that as 'kids being kids'.

I don't know about it being JUST a lack of discipline... obviously that is part of it. but what this CHILD did was MALICIOUS. Plain and simple. he went there, broke in WITH the INTENTION of killing those animals. I would even go as far as to say that this was something he had planned AHEAD for.

sorry but no matter which way anyone spins it that is not just regular old "boys will be boys" behaviour.

I think he needs to be in a psych ward until they figure out exactly what is going on inside his head because OBVIOUSLY his parents can't be trusted to keep him contained and keep him from doing such a thing again.
