my parents have 2 dogs, a pomeranian (puppy) and a schipperke. they play together a lot and when they play it's pretty rough but until today, no one got hurt so i thought they were fine. today, the schipperke got about a 5" gash from the pom. she had to be rushed to the vet to get stitches. it doesn't seem as though they hate each other and are being aggressive. how can i get the pom to stop playing so roughly? i don't think just seperating them will make a difference. is there some way i can punish the pom?

also does anyone know the cheapest place to get an invisible fence?

What exactly happened when the schipperke got the gash? Where/how did the pom bite her? What happened after - did the schipperke run away, act aggressive to the pom, tails tucked... did the pom go back for the schipperke or leave?

Of course there is nothing you can do to punish the pom now. The best thing to do would be to separate the dogs as the play is escalating, before it gets to the point where one dog gets hurt. Give them a short calming-down session, and when both dogs are calm again you can let them play again.

I have a similar problem and would be interested to hear some advice also...I have a 5lb dog and a 50lb dog and they play rough with the little one being the aggressor usually, the big dog knows how to be gentle but sometimes he leans too hard on the little one and there's a little yelp so I am afraid to leave them alone together. My big dog lived when a small dog before be he was older and laid down the law on the big dog so there was no problem.

I have a 7 lb chihuahua, and I'll say that I'd probably never leave her alone with a dog over about 30 lbs if they play together.... It's just not safe if you're not there to supervise.
