Since getting my dog I am becoming quite the discriminating poop bag connoisseur.

I have found free poop bags in places I never realized poop bags existed. But not all poop bags are the same.

On my regular walk around the marina and beach park there are five poop bag dispensers. They carry two types of bags. The cheesy thin blue ones with the handles and some rugged sack shaped black ones. What's up with the handled ones? The bags are so thin that on a cold morning the fresh contents feel disgustingly warm. It feels as though the bag may melt any second. And the handles; they just rob you of available stock to tie a proper knot. I always pass on the blue bag dispensers and hold out for the much more substantial black bags.

Near where I work I pass a dispenser which seems to have the Cadillac of all poop bags. Heavy white plastic with, get this, a second layer of material in the bottom (black) formed into a pocket. The bags are long enough for a good knot also. I call these the black and white bags.

And speaking of retrieval technique; Does anybody have any tips for retrieving the little gifts from long grass or asphalt. I've found both of these operating environments to be very problematic, especially on those "soft" days. Is it best to try to get beneath the target and lift it clear or to envelop the droppings from the top? Oh, and do you have better luck retrieving the small pieces first or do you go straight for the big ones? CeCe is is a creeping squatter so I usually have to deal with multiple targets in a line.

Any other sage wisdom about poop bags out there?

We don't have ANY free dispensers where I live! As a matter of fact I just tuck a plastic bag from the grocery store in my pocket.... I am careful though because alot of them have a small hole or two in the bottom.
Enjoyed reading your post though...very observant!

Poop bags are great :D

To pick up, I simply flip the bag inside out, and put it over my hand like a glove.

Pick up the poo, flip the bag right side in, and your hands are clean and free of poo!

As for methods... I turn my back to let Kona poo... I'll pick up her poo... I don't want to try to catch it LMAO!

I have some Mutt Mitts. They're white, and lined with a layer of black around the bottom. I think that's what you're describing. I don't think I'd pay for any bags, but these were free and work very well.

I just grabbed some biodegradable ones from Petsmart and use it like a glove to pick it up....usually don't have an issue with softies though, so it makes it a lot easier. Otherwise I use a grocery sack and call it good!

Yeah, those are the ones. I haven't seen them in the stores and I only know one place they are distributed.

Around our apartments they have the brown bags, fairly sturdy..I glove my hand, pick up, flip over and discard. Horrible story though...I took Zoe to a little pet festival where they had free microchipping. Zoe got nervous, then got the runs and it was a HUGE pile. I have ONE bag to pick up this massive amount of poop, a huge 70lb dog on a leash and a coke in my hand. I slowly scooped it up, the bag fell off my hand and I stuck my hand in the runny poop. :yikes: After collecting my dignity, my dog, her poop, and my coke..I found somewhere to drop off her little present and washed my hands for about 5 minutes.

We used to buy those but then we realized that they're a bit of a scam. I don't think they are 100% biodegradable. I think they just contain some corn starch so they are more biodegradable.

Instead, now we buy BioBags from Sitstay.com. http://www.sitstay.com/store/equip/poo.shtml

They're $34 for 400, which isn't too bad at all.

We reuse grocery bags. They are thin and the warmth of fresh poop is refreshing on a cold day. :)

I still refuse to pick up a poop through the bag... ick.

Luckily, people are terrible about cleaning sticks off their yards and the road here. Flip into the open bag. If its too soft to flip, its no longer poop and it does not go into the bag!

We have a little dispenser of those thick black ones literally FIFTEEN FEET from my patio door! The landowner supplies his tenants with free poop bags, in an effort to keep the meticulously groomed lawns clean and good-smelling!

(I live in a pet-welcoming apartment complex. It was designed with pets in mind - HUGE apartments, soundproofed walls, darkish carpet, large open spaces, lots of trees and grass for exercise and pee/pooping.)

I keep my poopbags attached to my flexi lead, its a must if you stay at a hotel or show site. I find the best way to attack said poop, is like others have siad, flip the bag inside out, use it as a glove, and dispose of it that way. If its loose, well .... just grab and scrape. LOL.
