Hello Chazhound Forum Members!

I thought this would be an interesting general dog discussion.
Cross breeds means two purebreds bred to make a new dog. ie: lab/poodle.

What do you perfer out of them?
Whats your thoughts, feelings, etc on these three catagories? (sp?)

It's three am here, should be in bed lol.

I love all dogs, purebreds, cross breeds, mixies. That's Me ;) :) :p

I love ALL dogs to, whether they are a mix of 4 different breeds or purebred ;) I don't however, condone any kind of MIXED breeding from so called "breeders". They are nothing but mutts with a fancy name and a very "high price". Also these so-called breeders of the mixed breeds are nothing but BACKYARD BREEDERS breeding solely for profit and not taking the health, temperament, etc. into consideration of the puppies they are producing. Search through chazhound in the breeding section of the forum and read some of the older threads that have already been started on the "designer dogs" you will see that those types of breedings are not supported here :D

I love mutts as well as Purebreds..........and to me that is the only two KINDS there are :) People can call it what they like, but if your dogs parents, and their parents, and their parents were not the same breed..............then you are a mutt, no matter the price tag. And there is NOTHING wrong with a good MUTT :D Got one from the humane society myself!

(bring on the nasty comments........you won't change my mind)

I'm a dog lover, purebred or mixed breed. Though I also don't condone breeding mixes! I tend to fall for mixes a lot more often then then I do purebreds! lol I'm just attracted to the mixes for some reason or another.

To me a dog is a dog, and I love them all whether they're mixed or purebred, Poorly bred, or well bred.

That being said, if I want to bring another dog into my life, chances are extremely high that I'll go to a responsible breeder for a purebred. I like knowing that my dog is well bred, and knowing what I can possibly expect as purebreds are pretty predictable as far as temperament and size goes. That, and there are very few breeds that fit me. If I'm going to get a dog, I need to know that she is going to suit me really well and vice versa. So, while I like all dogs, I'll be sticking to Tollers and maybe a couple of other breeds as I know that they are what fit me best.

I'll be owning purebreds and mixies for the rest of my life ^-^

if your only going to stick stay with purebreds, dont forget theres breed shelters that take in purebred breeds.
Should give them a try, might find a suitable or friendly loving dog there or puppy too. Besides breeders.

Can't breeders lie? How would you know they are good, etc?
You could pick a puppy and it could have hip problems or some kind of problems right away or within a year,
then you would dish out alot of money even though you thought you were getting a great dog from these great lines.

I'm not sure of other people's reasonings, but I don't trust either animal services or the Humane Society over here. A few bad experiences with both turned me off from ever getting another dog from either. My family has dogs from breed specific rescues, and actually don't currently have a dog from a breeder (in fact, we never have). However, I like the relationship that you can develop with a breeder and the fact that I have a greater chance of getting a dog with a temperament that is well suited to me. As far as health problems go, sure, they can occur, but with all of the parents' health testing and such the risk is lowered greatly. And yes, breeders can lie, which is why you have to do a ton of research and such to make sure you've found one who is reputable and one that you can trust completely.

I would say good reputable breeders who do their genetic homework don't need to lie. Their reputation usually precedes them and they have no problems showing results of testing done on their dogs, and they have no problem showing pedigrees of their dogs. They generally have no problem giving you names of people who have their dogs, and they generally do their absolute utmost to ensure the betterment of the breed and avoidance of breeding disasters. Good breeders breed for pride of the offspring and generally don't cut important corners for profit. They are also darned particular who gets one of their dogs.

Now I bet plenty of backyard breeders lie.

Well I suppose I prefer mixed breeds, because my favourite "breed" is defined by most everybody(self included) as being a mixed breed :p

The Alaskan Husky is probably the only mutt that people actually run hip tests and intentionally breed one dog to another to improve the "breed". However unless you're buying a fully trained and proven lead dog you won't find yourself paying very much for them.
So I suppose they don't fall into most of the same catagories as other mixed breeds.

I'm a mixed breed person myself. I do prefer my Alaskans, and will probably keep owning them for a long time. (Or atleast I hope too!) But I do love all dogs, and wouldnt shy away from the purebreds either.

i love both pure breeds and mixes aswell. but i have met a few mixes that i believe are aa good cross. like they look good but its still a mix and its still not respnsible. my mum had an afghan/red setter. gorgeous dog. no brain though. huge prey drive but so dopey. not a good mix for the brains, but very pretty.

I love mixed breeds. Purposely breeding them is unethical, of course. But that's what the animal shelter is for. :)

I love dogs, period. But for me, I tend toward the purebreds for the most part. And that's because I have very specific needs or wants in a dog. I want the traits that will work for me and my lifestyle. I want the dog to "fit" like a glove. I also can meet the parents and see what temperament they have and a lot can be surmised by that. Purebred dogs come with a certain degree of predicibility. And I like that.

There are a lot of people who get a dog, not knowing what is in it's background and it turns out, when the dog is older that many of the traits are not what the person really had in mind. For example, I really like a dog that has a strong propensity toward working WITH me, very trainable and focused on what we're doing as a team. A hound dog or husky probably wouldn't fit that bill, as they're very independent workers. I like a dog that sticks close to me. Again, a hound type in general, really loves running off, or so I have come to observe. LOL. I would hate that.

With getting a mix, you just don't always know what's in their background. Some people don't care about that and that's OK too. They think they're getting a medium sized dog that doesn't eat too much and doesn't take up much space and it ends up being the size of a mastiff.

I happen to have a mix also and she's absolutely terrific, very smart and quick to learn, willing, has short hair (don't like a lot of mess) and just lovely. So, of course, you can end up with a great dog in a mixed breed. I've had several in my past. It's just more of a crap shoot unless you can tell what the dog is made up of.

I'd buy a mix from a breeder, DEPENDING ON WHY THE BREEDER BRED SAID MIX!!!!! For example, lets say I am looking for a catch dog and I see that a boar hunter has recently whelped a litter of Dogo/Pit or Pit/Greyhound or Dogo/Greyhound I may consider buying a pup from him if he can give me a logical reason why those two dogs of differing breeds were chosen to be mated. Or if I decided I wanted to up the speed of my dogsled team, I may not look for a purebred Siberian Husky but rather a Siberian Husky/Greyhound or perhaps a Siberian Husky/German Shorthaired Pointer.

I will NEVER support a breeder who mixes breeds just cause they sound/look cool. I will NEVER support a breeder that does not have a just cause for breeding whether it be purbred or mixed.

Sometimes its better to go for a purebred and other times a mix breed can simply do the job better. Since I aim for functionality, looks and "papers" are of no concern to me. So long as the dog is sound and healthy and can do the job I am happy. And if it cant, well, I'll find another job for it.

Yeah makes alot of sense you are all making, its good to see how we are all different however we all have things in common by loving all dogs, weather we would own certien ones or not. Thats whats nice about this forum. Mixies are there own being, less health pro's,

etc.
