I was reading about "Bo" and came across this statement

With an estimated three million dogs and cats euthanized every year, every dog purchased by a breeder is a death sentence for those in rescue centers, they say.
really?! ugh!!

that line makes me so angry. it makes no SENSE!
GOOD RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS ARE NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM!

... lets hope they leave the family alone to enjoy their new puppy.

exactly!

unlikely they will be left alone.
He NEVER should have "promised" he would get a dog from a certain place, I know he thought it sounded good and maybe he really believed he would do it but with such a personal decision he should have maintained it was none of anyones business and left it at that. He kind of invited all this scrutiny... no one has cared where Presidential dogs came from before.
Im sure they will enjoy the new puppy regardless of all the hype.

The dog in a way IS a rescue. No, it didn't come from a shelter or rescue, but it came from a family who couldn't keep it anymore and I think that keeping the dog OUT of a shelter or rescue should be commended. *sigh* people suck.

You've got to understand that for the Faux News people, EVERYTHING this man and his family do is going to be interpreted and presented as a heinous crime.

I may slap my mother if she hands me another Mallard Fillmore strip clipped from the local right-wingnutter rag (Morristown Citizen-Tribune). I wasn't allowed to say one thing -- even with video evidence to back me up -- against McCain or the Shrub in her presence. I'm not in the Obama fan club by a long shot but all of this right wingnutter crap is calumny of the first caliber. They're as bad as the ARista asshats.

Leave these little girls along to enjoy their puppy! :madgo:

Well the thing is, if it were conservative commentators saying it, I would brush it off as "politics as usual" but the people I hear complaining are on left leaning news programs and the quote above is from an "animal activist" and most of those people are USUALLY liberals.

I think that plenty of people will still stand by and take rescue dogs into their homes. Obama is entitled to have whatever dog he deems best for him and his kids, just like every other President before him, nothing more and nothing less. George Bush inherited a Scottish Terrier from former Gov. of NJ, Christie Whitman and no one made a big stink about him getting THAT dog, and Barney certainly was no "pound puppy". Let's let the Obama's do what they think is best for their girls.

When one becomes a wingnut, your views become very close to those of your opposing wingnuts.

Here we have left wingnuts demanding that people live in a certain way (Shelter animals in this case, but also general AR stuff) while the right wingnuts insist on "protesting" at funerals. Both are uncomfortably totalitarian.

he wouldn't have gone to a shelter/rescue, he'd have gone right back to his breeder, who is the person who chose to place the pup with the obamas. which is as it should be.

but of course, this is not how it will be spun. Because responsible breeders doing responsible things is not what we want to the world to se... we want them to think that everyone who has a litter is a puppy mill...

WAIT.... it gets better.

Courtesy of the director of a "rescue" organization...

"I am really disappointed," Kwalick said, calling the Obamas' decision "elitist" for "wanting a pure breed and getting it from a breeder so that it is presumed perfect."

can you guys believe what an elitist and cold calculating SOB Obama is. Imagine the audacity to get a slightly older puppy rather than an 8 week old so they better know the temperment. I can't even begin to fathom how he could factor in his wanting a larger dog and the fact that his daughters have allergies and taking his time to find a breed that fit both criteria of being larger and non shedding. Throw on top of that he went to a reputable breeder that had a dog that fit the bill that another family couldn't keep. What an elitist pig that Obama is, doing what he finds best for his family and the dog they will add to their family.
