I thought this might be an interesting thread. Everyone has a limit to what they can handle in a pet, both financially and with training. There is nothing wrong with admiting those limits. Would you adopt the following dogs. Keep in mind that there as "as is" dogs you are considering, not a beloved pet of your own that has developed issues.
Behavioral
1)Had severe separation anxiety?
2)Was a constant talker/whiner?
3)Was impossible to housebreak?
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage?
Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections?
6)Required expensive medication?
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death?
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting?
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered?
10)is elderly?
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder?
Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans?
13)Weighed more than 100lbs?
14)Weighed less than 5lbs?
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder)
Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive?
17)Is severely small animal aggressive?
18)Is child aggressive?
19)Is aggressive toward some adults?
20)Had a bite history?
Personally:
1)Yes. I can take my dog to work and it would seldom have to be alone
2)No. For some reason, a whiny dog drives me crazy and would be a poor match.
3)No. I rent and can not have the place destroyed
4)Yes. I do best with timid/traumatized dogs and enjoy working with them.
5)Yes. None of that bothers me
6)No. I just don't have the money right now
7)Probably yes. It would depend on if we were talking weeks/months/years
8)Yes, provided I could comfortably lift him/her.
9)Yes. I already diaper a cat at work, so I've lost any sense of disgust over it
10)Yes. My elderly beagle is the best dog anyone could ask for.
11)Yes. I've dealt with epilepsy and feel I could handle most heath issues
12)Yes, provided it wasn't on my apartments list.
13)Yes. The bigger the better in my opinion
14)No. I would be afraid to live with a creature so tiny. I would never get over the thought that I might step on it and kill it.
15)Yes, although most of the unhealthiest breeds don't interest me.
16)Yes. I only want one dog.
17)No. Until Angry Puss passes, he will always be first in my heart.
18)No. I have three small nephews, one that is an infant and any dog must be safe with them.
19)Maybe. It would depend on how agressive
20) Yes. Provided it was not an unprovoked attack on someone.

How do the rest of you feel?

1)Had severe separation anxiety? Yes - granted I had the time it takes to work through this particular issue.
2)Was a constant talker/whiner? No, honestly - it's apet peeve of mine.
3)Was impossible to housebreak? No - I can handle that in a dog I've grown to love, but poop and pee is not the way to my heart
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage? Yes.

Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections? Yes
6)Required expensive medication? Depends on the quality of life for the dog - I don't want to deplete my entire dog support budget on medications alone.
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death? Yes - I don't need a dog's whole lifetime to love it deeply.
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting? Yes
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered? If it was an "as is" dog no - I will be willing to do it with the cogs I've already grown to love, but as I said - poo is not the way to my heart.
10)is elderly? YES
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder? Yes

Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans? Yes - already done, twice. Dont' intend to stop.
13)Weighed more than 100lbs? Yes
14)Weighed less than 5lbs? No - too much risk of being hurt by my dobes
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder) Yes - known for does not mean guaranteed.

Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive? Depends on how many dogs I have at the time - since i'll have multiple dogs.. probably not, sadly.
17)Is severely small animal aggressive? Yes - already have one of these dogs in my house
18)Is child aggressive? Yes
19)Is aggressive toward some adults? yes
20)Had a bite history? Depends on the history... severe unprovoked, no. If the dog had a good reason, i.e. kid was stomping on its tail, owner thought it would be funny to try to sneak up on dog while it was sleeping, etc. - YES

In all of my answers, the words "as long as I can afford it"

Behavioral
1)Had severe separation anxiety? Maybe. Depends on how serious it was.
2)Was a constant talker/whiner? No. That would drive me up a wall.
3)Was impossible to housebreak? No. That would be certain death for the dog at my mother's hands.. not that I could deal with it, either, but at least I wouldn't take it out on the poor dog.
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage? Prolly not.
Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections?Meds, okay. Injections, no. NO. Because there will always be that one time when you're not there/can't make it home.. and who will give your dog injections for you? I can't even convicne my FAMILY MEMBERS to give my pets PILLS.
6)Required expensive medication? No, not unless it was financially do-able.
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death? Yes.
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting? No.
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered? No.. same reason, sadly as the un-housetrainable scenario. I can't say I would willingly bring an animal in my home that I know I'd need to clean the butt of.. I have enough of that with Emma.
10)is elderly? Yes!
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder? I don't know enough about those to say.
Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans? Depends on my circumstances... if I was in an area I would be unable to get out of that had or was going to have a breed ban, no, it would be irresponsible of me. ETA: What I meant to say there is "for the most part, probably." I'm too tired to be answering this.
13)Weighed more than 100lbs? Sure, as long as I can afford the bigger medical/food costs.
14)Weighed less than 5lbs? No.
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder) Em.. prolly not.. but like a lot of the cases above, it depends.
Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive?Knowingly.. god no. DA isn't something I ever want to deal with.
17)Is severely small animal aggressive? No, I have cats.
18)Is child aggressive? Possibly.
19)Is aggressive toward some adults? Depends.
20)Had a bite history? Depends on the history. ETA: What Sizzle said.

Very interesting, indeed! I've thought of most of these, before... but not a few of them.

Behavioral
1)Had severe separation anxiety? Yes. Gonzo went through a seperation anxiety stage. It was mild, but I think I could handle a more severe case. And at least one person is ALWAYS home.
2)Was a constant talker/whiner? It depends. If the talking was fairly soft, and endearing, I would be fine with that. But if it was piercing/loud/howling/baying... no thanks!
3)Was impossible to housebreak? No. That's just gross, if this means, the dog will pee/poop only inside. If that means they need a lot of supervision and potty breaks, I could probably handle that.
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage? No.

Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections? Yes.
6)Required expensive medication? Yes.
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death? Yes.
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting? No. I mean, I would not mind at all if this happened to one of my current dogs... but part of what I love about my dogs is activity. I wouldn't go out and adopt a dog that wasn't mobile.
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered? No.
10)is elderly? I probably would not go looking for an elderly dog, no.
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder? Yes.

Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans? Yes.
13)Weighed more than 100lbs? YES!
14)Weighed less than 5lbs? Yes.
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder) Yes.

Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive? No. I don't feel I could handle it.
17)Is severely small animal aggressive? No, not if I owned any small animals, which I'm planning on. It would scare me too much.
18)Is child aggressive? No.
19)Is aggressive toward some adults? It depends... on whether this is fear aggression, or outright aggression.
20)Had a bite history? Again, it depends. Mostly on the whole situation of the bite, the severity, the individual dog, etc.

Behavioral
1)Had severe separation anxiety? Depends on the severity and the size of the dog.
2)Was a constant talker/whiner? Yes to a talker, no to a whiner. Depends on if it is a constant barker too.
3)Was impossible to housebreak? No.
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage? Yes.

Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections? Yes.
6)Required expensive medication? Yes.
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death? Yes, I would.
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting? Depends on the size of the dog.
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered? No.
10)is elderly? Yes, I've always wanted to adopt a senior.
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder? Yes.

Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans? Yes.
13)Weighed more than 100lbs? If it's the breed I want.
14)Weighed less than 5lbs? Yes.
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder) Yes.

Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive? No, I may adopt when I don't have any others but I always have other dogs around me and going through my home and I like to take mine to shows when I work, etc. Now if it was a small dog, I can deal with it. But I'll admit that I would not want a big DA dog.
17)Is severely small animal aggressive? Yes.
18)Is child aggressive? Yes.
19)Is aggressive toward some adults? Depends on the severity and what type of person the dog is aggressive towards.
20)Had a bite history? Depends on what that history is and the dogs background.

Although Tilly came here as a foster and apparently had a history of being aggressive toward some men and children and I wasn't told about it first. I don't think I would have taken her if I would have known about her history. She's now so much better with trusting most humans, I still have to be careful with her though.

3)Was impossible to housebreak?
No
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage?
Probably not, but it would depend on other facts
Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections?
Yes
6)Required expensive medication?
Define expensive, but yes
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death?
Theoretically, yes, if was an awesome dog

10)is elderly?
Yes

Yes, though it depends on the problem.
Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans?
Yes, depending on where I lived
13)Weighed more than 100lbs?
Yes
14)Weighed less than 5lbs?
If I wanted a small dog, no reason not to, the exact degree of tiny doesn't bother me

Yes
Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive?
No, not practical
17)Is severely small animal aggressive?
No, same reason

No

4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage?
yes

13)Weighed more than 100lbs?
yes

14)Weighed less than 5lbs?
no

1)Had severe separation anxiety?
yes, but it really depends on my time and the severity of it. I've had some experience with this, and would be willing to work with it.
2)Was a constant talker/whiner? Maybe. The high pitch loud whining or howling hurts my ears, however, if it was quieter/less high pitched or I thought I could potentially train for 'quiet' I would give it a try.
3)Was impossible to housebreak? yes - I've helped house train "impossible" dogs :p
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage? yes
Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections?
yes
6)Required expensive medication? If I could afford it, Yes!
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death? Yes, but that would be hard
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting? yes, I've met dogs with wheelchairs - and they didn't even know the difference!
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered? Maybe - depends on how much time I am from home, etc
10)is elderly? YES! Elderly dogs are absolute gems to adopt...
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder? yes
Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans?
considering that I have a GSD, and some places are already trying to ban them  yes
13)Weighed more than 100lbs? haha yes
14)Weighed less than 5lbs? probably not, but maybe
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder) yes

3)Was impossible to housebreak? yes
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage? yes

Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections? Yes
6)Required expensive medication? Probably not as I'm a broke college student and that'd be tough for me. I have no problems getting Nik her $130 a month meds, but she's already my dog.
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death? Yes
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting? No, wouldn't work with apartment/stairs
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered? yes
10)is elderly? Yes, definitely
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder? epilepsy or something manageable, then yes

Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans? as long as it's not banned where I live. While I'm renting, then no. I think it'd be a dumb move to get something I know will cause a lot of problems with me finding an apartment. If/When I get my own house, then it'd be no problem.
13)Weighed more than 100lbs? Once I'm out of the apartment, then yes.
14)Weighed less than 5lbs? If it were a really small papillon. ;)
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder) Yes

Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive? Nope, not at all. I never plan on having only one dog
17)Is severely small animal aggressive? Nope, got Summer and Scout to think of first.
18)Is child aggressive? Nope
19)Is aggressive toward some adults? Nope
20)Had a bite history? Not likely

In short, aggression is one issue I will do my best to not have to deal with.

I wouldn't adopt any of them, simply because I want to do specific activities with my dogs and much of what's listed wouldn't be able to take part in those activities. But, if I was just looking for a house pet dog, then ~

1)Had severe separation anxiety?Yes. The dog can come with me to work.
2)Was a constant talker/whiner?Yes. I already have dogs that talk a lot, one more would be fine.
3)Was impossible to housebreak?Maybe. Depends on what's meant by impossible. If I had a yard setup where the dog could go out as he pleased.
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage?Yes.

5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections?Yes to meds, no to injections. I had to give Ares injections for a while and I was horrible at doing it.
6)Required expensive medication? If I was sure I could continue to afford it.
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death?Yes.
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting?No, because where I live, there are too many stairs that the dog has to go up and down.

10)is elderly?Yes.
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder?Yes, as long as I could afford whatever vet care was needed.
Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans?If he's not banned where I live, yes.

15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder)Again, as long as I can afford the vet care and have the time necessary to treat him.

17)Is severely small animal aggressive?Maybe.
18)Is child aggressive?No.

20)Had a bite history?Depends on the circumstances.

1)Had severe separation anxiety? Yes
2)Was a constant talker/whiner? Probably...thats something I would feel confident working through
3)Was impossible to housebreak? I'm not sure, probably just because it's not a huge deal to keep it on a regular schedule
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage? Definitely

Health

5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections? Most likely, shots don't scare me for animals. It would mostly depend of the cost.
6)Required expensive medication? Again it would depend on the cost
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death? Yes, without a doubt.
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting? Most likely if I had the time to properly care for him/her.
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered? Honestly, no.
10)is elderly? Yes, again, without a doubt
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder? It would depend on alot: The cost if he needs to be on meds, how the quality of life is, how often do the epilepsy occur, and what is happening in my life at the time. If I had a young child, no I don't think I would purposly go out and adopt a dog like this.

Breed

12)Is found on many breed bans? Yes
13)Weighed more than 100lbs? LOL, YES!
14)Weighed less than 5lbs? Mostly likely
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder) I think it would depend on the induvidual dog and what his medical history is.

Aggression

16)Is severely dog aggressive? No...just because I've had this in the past and it's a HARD thing to work through. And for me to purposely go out and adopt a dog like this as a pet for me, no, I just wouldn't do it.
17)Is severely small animal aggressive? Depends on how bad it really is. Aggression is severly over-exaderated by most.
18)Is child aggressive? No, definitely NO.
19)Is aggressive toward some adults? Depends on what "some adults" means
20)Had a bite history? I'd have to think long and hard about adopting a dog like this into my home.

I answered "No" to alot of the last questions just because I personally don't want to have that type of dog in my house. It limits alot of what you can and can't do with that dog and puts uneeded stress/worry on the owner (me).
Now, I wouldn't have any problem taking in the dog for a month or two of training then sending it back to it's home or finding a home for it.

Honestly, I would probably adopt any dog that got along with my dogs, who I had the ability and time to work with. As this point in time I would not adopt any other dogs with fear aggression/aggression problems because I have enough to deal with right now (Daisy).

1)Had severe separation anxiety? Yes
2)Was a constant talker/whiner? No problem
3)Was impossible to housebreak? Of course, I can afford paper towels
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage? Why not?
Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections?
Have a foster like that already.
6)Required expensive medication? Been there
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death? Needs someone, don't they?
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting? Doesn't keep them down
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered? Just like a baby.
10)is elderly? My Favorite!
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder? No biggie
Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans?
I don't see why not.
13)Weighed more than 100lbs? More to love!
14)Weighed less than 5lbs? Hmmm... Tough call.
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder) They didn't ask for it!
Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive?
So long as I didn't have another dog, or I could crate and rotate.
17)Is severely small animal aggressive? I can keep the kitties away.
18)Is child aggressive? No kids here!
19)Is aggressive toward some adults? I don't get along with everybody, either. Big deal!
20)Had a bite history? Everybody deserves a second chance, who knows what could have caused it last time!

Of course, I'm being overly optimistic, but working in rescue, I'd try to take on just about anything if they needed a place to stay. I'd try everything in my power to make it work for them.

1)Had severe separation anxiety?
Yes, if my situation allowed it. Like if I could take it everywhere till I could work through its issues. Not if I was going to be away 10 hours a day, that wouldn't be fair.
2)Was a constant talker/whiner?
Yes, so long as my neighbours wern't dog haters
3)Was impossible to housebreak?
Yes
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage?
Yes
Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections?
Yes
6)Required expensive medication?
Yes, if I could afford it. I wouldn't if I didn't think I was stable enough to keep it up though.
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death?
Yes, it still deserves a life.
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting?
Yes, so long as I was physically strong enough to lift it
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered?
yes, probably. I've already excepted this type of thing might start with older dogs.
10)is elderly?
Yes
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder?
Yes
Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans?
Yes
13)Weighed more than 100lbs?
Yes
14)Weighed less than 5lbs?
Yes
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder)
Depends on my financial situation and what I had planned for the dog.

Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive?
Not at this stage, in future when it would be my only dog and I had the time to work through issues, then maybe. But I'm also a person that likes to have multiple dogs so it would depend on the situation
17)Is severely small animal aggressive?
Depends on my situation, but probably nopt as I have a love of cats, rabbits and rats and do plan on rehabilitating wildlife one day
18)Is child aggressive?
Not at this stage, if I ever do decide to have children/fall pregnant unexpectadly, I would hate to give up a dog.
19)Is aggressive toward some adults?
Yes
20)Had a bite history?
Depends on the history
