I thought this might be an interesting thread. Everyone has a limit to what they can handle in a pet, both financially and with training. There is nothing wrong with admiting those limits. Would you adopt the following dogs. Keep in mind that there as "as is" dogs you are considering, not a beloved pet of your own that has developed issues.
Behavioral
1)Had severe separation anxiety?
2)Was a constant talker/whiner?
3)Was impossible to housebreak?
4)Was a puppy mill survivor who has spent 10 years in a tiny cage?
Health
5)Required medication 2x a day. Injections?
6)Required expensive medication?
7)Had a degenerative disease eventually resulting in an early death?
8)Was Paralyzed and required a cart/lifting?
9)Had no bladder/bowel control and needed to be expressed or diapered?
10)is elderly?
11)Had a reoccurring problem, such as epilepsy or an autoimmune disorder?
Breed
12)Is found on many breed bans?
13)Weighed more than 100lbs?
14)Weighed less than 5lbs?
15)Is known for severe health problems? (remember this is a rescue, not from a reputable breeder)
Aggression
16)Is severely dog aggressive?
17)Is severely small animal aggressive?
18)Is child aggressive?
19)Is aggressive toward some adults?
20)Had a bite history?
Personally:
1)Yes. I can take my dog to work and it would seldom have to be alone
2)No. For some reason, a whiny dog drives me crazy and would be a poor match.
3)No. I rent and can not have the place destroyed
4)Yes. I do best with timid/traumatized dogs and enjoy working with them.
5)Yes. None of that bothers me
6)No. I just don't have the money right now
7)Probably yes. It would depend on if we were talking weeks/months/years
8)Yes, provided I could comfortably lift him/her.
9)Yes. I already diaper a cat at work, so I've lost any sense of disgust over it
10)Yes. My elderly beagle is the best dog anyone could ask for.
11)Yes. I've dealt with epilepsy and feel I could handle most heath issues
12)Yes, provided it wasn't on my apartments list.
13)Yes. The bigger the better in my opinion
14)No. I would be afraid to live with a creature so tiny. I would never get over the thought that I might step on it and kill it.
15)Yes, although most of the unhealthiest breeds don't interest me.
16)Yes. I only want one dog.
17)No. Until Angry Puss passes, he will always be first in my heart.
18)No. I have three small nephews, one that is an infant and any dog must be safe with them.
19)Maybe. It would depend on how agressive
20) Yes. Provided it was not an unprovoked attack on someone.
