It wasn't directed at you. I'm just thinking about people who actually can hold a gun to their dog's head and snuff the life out of it when it's only a puppy that is a little on the rambunctious side....too much trouble. And I gather there are people in this world who can do that. And of course, so much worse.

In fact RTH....I don't think you'd be on a dog forum like this if you didn't love dogs. I have a feeling you're playing devil's advocate, but I'm not sure.:p Maybe you are more able to see where those kinds of people are coming from. I can sort of, but I still don't sympathize with that kind of thought process...that a dog is no more valuable than some other kind of tool...that he is disposable with hardly any attempt at finding a better solution.

I really hope this is in no way directed at me, because quite frankly my dear, you couldn't be further from the truth. But if it makes you feel better to think so, go right ahead. I highly doubt there is a person here that has cried harder or felt more pain than I did when I had to say good bye to my old girl.
Like you mentioned in a post in this thread earlier, you care about YOUR dogs... but there are so many dogs out there that it doesn't matter if some are shot instead of surrendered to a shelter.

I mean, they're just dogs, right? They're just wasting our tax dollars and time. Let's just kill them so the problem will go away.

I love and respect ALL dogs... and to hear of a young dog being shot rather than given a chance at having another home is just disgusting.

Of course I don't hold people that shoot puppies in the head for being rambunctious in a very good light. i also don't think too much of people that dump unwanted rambunctious puppies off at a shelter to become someone else's responsibility. They're about the same in my book. But if that's what they chose to do, it's what they chose to do. I certainly don't sympathize with them. I find them to be a bit lacking to put it simply.

I do sympathize with those that do take on the responsbility to end their pet's life for any number of reasons that I do find valid, but have to be scrutinized by everyone else that have zero personal involvement in the situation.

I do feel sympathy for the guy that takes his old beagle on one last hunt and cries in the woods for hours and has trouble going back home. I feel badly for those that say good bye to their pets at home and put them in their backyard next to every other pet they've ever owned. I feel badly for them not only for their loss, but because there's a group of people all over the place that say they should be made criminals and ask how anyone can shoot their pet and look at them thru some moral microscope and can't see anything but the final outcome.

So while I find that when someone that has a litter of puppies with no homes, puts a .22 to all their heads to be rather troubling, I don't see much of a difference between doing a difficult thing yourself, or dumping them off somewhere else to have someone else do it.

Shooting a dog in the head only does one thing: causes death. It's the only option.

Dropping a dog off at a shelter can end in a number of different scenerios. A dog can be adopted into a new home. A rescue can pull the dog out. The dog can be euthanized.

At least give the dog a CHANCE at a life rather than just shooting them. Dropping a dog at a shelter isn't a guaranteed death.

There is nothing wrong with this.

Your dog was old, sick, and in pain. Whether it was from a bullet or the euthanasia drug, you did the most humane thing you could do for Rosie at the end of her life.

I couldn't imagine using a gun as a substitute for euthanasia (I didn't grow up in a situation/location where it is a NORMAL thing to do so it would make me uncomfortable), but I DO understand why people would choose to do it. If you know it's going to be a single clean shot, then I don't see anything inhumane about it.

I respect how your family let Rosie going while feeling calm, happy, and loved. I DREAD having to make the decision(s) one day to put my dogs to sleep. Going to the vet stresses them out. Having the vet come to the house would stress them out as well.

But anyway, my issue is ending a dog's life with a bullet out of convenience, ignorance, laziness, etc, etc.

And it actually made me feel sick to read the post where dogs are comparable to a screw driver, and how spending a month to find a dog a new home is just too difficult. That way of thinking is just disgusting to me. Of course, dogs are legally considered property, but it is human DECENCY to give them the respect they deserve.

Mans best friend and all that jazz. If you take a dog into your home and they don't work for you, then it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY as a decent human being to find them a new home.

Again, Rory is rowdy and young. Who agrees I should tie him to a tree and just shoot him myself? It's a big inconvenience to me to find him a home and I don't feel like driving to the shelter. I mean, it's humane- he'll just die and that's that. What if the home I placed him in was abusive? It's better just to shoot him myself than take the time to find a place for him to go
Okay, so we're in agreement. And like I said, I don't know if I could do it. I seriously doubt it. I definitely didn't pull the trigger on Rosie, I was just there to say goodbye to her and I know how quick and painless it was.

As for a rowdy dog that doesn't suit me or is becoming a problem and I don't want to keep it. . .If I couldn't handle my dog, I can't even begin to fathom thinking I should shoot it OR have it euthanized at a vet's office. I'd do anything to give it a chance with someone who suited it better. So you live in an area where shelters are overflowing? Can't find a shelter who will take your dog, or it has a low chance of being adopted? Feel out people who are interested in the breed. Get on the internet. Don't have internet? Drive 3 hours to a library that does if you need to. Look around for breed rescues. Talk to breeders. See if a rescue will post a courtesy ad. Hang on with your "nuisance" dog until you've done everything you can to save its life. Once you buy or adopt a dog, that dog is YOURS. Yours to take care of while it's living, and yours to be with when it dies and if it needs to leave your home due to circumstances you can't deal with. When you can't keep a dog anymore, there aren't just the two options of shooting it and dumping it at a shelter to be euthanized.

Holy wow. So this is what it comes to, eh? Making personal attacks on a person that has nothing to do with the topic being discussed. What's wrong, run out of ammo?

I'm curious as to what relevance this comment has to the discussion?
when i've spelled out exactly why i've stated something and they come in with a comment that says nothing of what has come from me, I really question the comprehension skills of the reader.

and BTW, are there any other posts in this thread you question the relevance of? or just that one? :)

I'm really not so sure. I can name a good handful of people over the years on here who truly don't love or respect dogs.
Now that you mention it, yes...so true.

To put it as plainly as I can...giving a fighting chance at life for all dogs is what real animal lovers are all about. Dumping or killing dogs for frivolous reasons does not come from real animal lovers. And by "real," I don't mean people whose main interest in dogs is all about what they do for them....doesn't hunt or retrieve right, kill it...doesn't behave right, kill it. But taking a dog to a shelter or rescue has a good chance of getting the dog a home. If it's a dog that can not be rehabilitated and is dangerous, then no, it should not be adopted out. If the dog doesn't get a home and languishes in a concrete cell for very long, then no....it's not a humane kind of life and the dog should be euthanized imo. But killing a dog should never be the first option or the easy way out. That's what it sounds like the man in the OP's story was doing. And if he wasn't, if we don't have all the facts, then my position transfers to anybody who fits the description.

There are people who think they love, but it's all about what's in it for them. How wrong they are. And there are people who know love to be what they can do for another, who enjoy to their inner-most soul, watching the joy a dog gets from a good life.
