Those two dogs are VERY lucky they found you!!! :) Little pupppies are surely my weakness, I get shivers and want to cry for some reason. Good luck with them and keep us all updated...like...everyday :)

Congrats! I'm so glad you took her in. The puppies are so cute. I hope you will be able to find good homes for all of them.

Lucy and the pups are all doing great. Taking them all to the vet tomorrow.
I'll be sure to get a pic of the biggest and smallest pup next to each other. There is one brown and white one that is huge compared to all the rest.

I hope you will be able to find good homes for all of them.
I've already found homes for 5 of them....Not as hard to find homes for the puppies as I thought it would be. I really want to keep a puppy, but not sure if I'll be able to since I've adopted the Mom and the Dad. My mutt (B.H.) and my Aussie (Khaki) are getting along great with Archie. I haven't let them have contact with Lucy yet, but I really don't think there will be any problems there either. If I keep a pup I would be up to 5 dogs, and that's a bit much for me......

You did such a good thing by taking her in. Where is this dog house? I highly, highy recommend that if they're not already in your house, that you raise them for the time you have them inside....like in your kitchen. Puppies, in order to be the most well adjusted and socialized are raised around normal household noises, comings and goings, people or all sizes and ages...plenty of handling by humans etc. What your pups experience now until 8 weeks or so when they get their new homes will have a profound affect on them forever and it's a time you can not re-coup once it's past. So, it's really important to get them use to all kinds of things that they'll see in their future.

I hope they all get good homes. It must be a hard thing to make sure each one will be cared for well.

Good luck. I hope we see more pictures. Beagles are the cutest puppies and if that's the Dad, they're guaranteed to be over-the-top, chalk full of cuteness.

The dog house is located right outside my back door. I'd really like to bring them in, but my Aussie is an inside dog and I really don't have a place in my house to keep them seperated from the Beagle and her pups (my kitchen, living room, and dining room is all open, no doors). I could put Khaki outside for a few weeks, but she digs and can easily get out of the fenced in back yard, so that's not an option. The pups are getting a lot of human interaction. I may bring the Beagle and pups in and put them in my spare bedroom. Problem here is that the bedroom is carpeted and I don't think the Beagle is house trained.

I noticed yesterday that the Beagle is shedding like crazy.....Is this a normal thing after giving birth? There is one spot on her back between her shoulders about as round as a golf ball where she is almost completely bald in that spot....being a stray, I hope it's not the mange.....

Anyway, taking them all to the vet at 1:00 today (Friday).

Can you put a baby gate across the opening or some kind of baracade....a sheet of plywood? If those pups aren't raised in the house, close to vaccums, rattling of pots and pans, TV, people walking in and out of their enclosure, very frequent handling, voices, kids, adults, other dogs near by, they'll have a real problem with shyness when they are older. Shy dogs often become biting dogs and then they get euthanized. It's extremely important to begin the socialization process immediately and continue when the new families get them.

The breeder of my Doberman kept a crate in the kitchen (vinyl flooring) and a baby gate across to keep the other Dobermans and another breed...I think it was an aussie mix out. She'd be in there cooking and stepping over them, washing the floor with all these puppies scrambling over her, climbing on her back (when they were a little older...about 8 weeks) and she'd be talking to them in her rather loud voice. Her neighbor kids would come over and play with them. There were people coming in and out. Of course, she was careful to make sure they washed their hands before handling and taking shoes off outside first until they had their first shots I think. Anyhow...not to be a nag, but this is one of those things I'm passionate about and really concerns me.

This crate is right in her kitchen. The puppies are getting socialized or accustomed to a crate at the same time as giving them a secure place to rest. She left the door off.

It all just makes for a good head start during a very, very critical period.

Thanks for the info, I'm going to try to get something worked out this evening on bringing them in......It'll have to be in my spare bedroom though.

Well, the vet visit went great. Lucy and all the pups are healthy. The vet said that the shedding I mentioned in the earlier post is normal and that it's not the mange...:)

Oh good. I forgot about that part of your post....the shedding. I am glad all is well there. The problem with the bedroom is you probably have carpet in there, right? I just don't know what you can do. I think you're doing great though and what a lucky Beagle to have you to take care of her and her babies. Can't wait to see pictures as they grow.

Lucy and the pups are in my house now. My house was built about 3 years ago and I had a bunch of scrap carpet that was left over, so I took that and layed it down over the existing capet in the spare room. Apparently Lucy was either house trained, or she doesn't want to mess up close to the puppies....she scratches at the door to let me know she needs to go out. She hasn't made a mess in the house yet....

I'm really starting to worry about the runt of the litter. She doesn't seem to be able to up right herself as well as the others, even when she's nurseing she lays on her side while the others are all up right and nurseing. I'll sit her up right, and she will just roll back over on her side...She also doesn't seem to be able to crawl as well as the others. I've been helping her out with getting a spot for some milk....Most of the time she's able to get there on her own, but if she gives up, I help her out...

Oh that is good. I would still worry though, about when the puppies pee, having it go through the carpet remnant into your existing carpet. I wonder if you can put something else over that. (?) Is there plenty of normal house hold activity in there? Not that puppies should be harrassed 24/7 (lol) but that they get to experience all kinds of stuff that goes on in a family household. Anyhow, this sounds a whole lot better.

You're doing so well to try and help that runt...lots of work, making sure she gets food every hour or so. What about seeing a vet about that? It must be very worrying. Hopefully, with your help with getting enough food, she'll pick up. But I think a vet would be able to give you some more ideas and maybe check her over. Best of luck.

I cut a couple of plastic garbage bags and put the whelping box I made on top of them to prevent anything from getting to the carpet under the box.

Well, I live alone, so there isn't a whole lot of activity during the day. My parents live next door to me and my Mom has been going over to my house every 2 hours or so to check on them and let Lucy out while I'm at work.

The runt doesn't seem to be getting weak or anything, just not growing as fast as the rest. Taking them back to the vet at 3 weeks old to be de-wormed, so I'll wait until then unless she seems to be getting weak or something. I'm keeping a close eye on her.....

Kudos to you for helping this girl in need and her new babies. She's a lucky dog to say the least.

One of the best things you can do for her right now is make sure she's on a very high quality dog food with a higher fat and protein content. Also, feeding her a hard-boiled egg each day and adding a little cottage cheese to her kibble daily will help ensure she gets what she needs to nurse that large litter.

Best of luck!

Well, I took Lucy and the pups to the vet yesterday for their de-worming. Unfortunately the runt of the litter had to be put down. The vets said she had a neaurological (sp?) problem and would never live a quality life. 2 different vets in the office took a look at her. I had started bottle feeding her b/c she was getting so thin. Although she was putting on weight, she still never got to the point of being able to stand up and walk like all the rest. She would lay on her side and try to crawl, but would just go around in circles.
All of the other pups are doing great. All eyes are open and they have become aware of each other and have started the puppy playing.
