I took Brutus into the vet today to get his rabies and vaccinations. And everything is going fine, until my vet decides to give a once over and he does not seem to like her pulling on his hind legs. Not trying to bite but more like this is very uncomfortable. She gets very concerned and asked about the parents health certs, told her I had seen them. Anyway The more we talked the more my heart went into my stomach.(He is fine laying on the floor eating dog cookies) She wanted me to watch him for three weeks until his next appt. Asked me if he had hurt himself of course I am to the point where the dead brain sydrome has kicked in and I am thinking the worse and could not think of anything except holding the tears back.. Anyway we ended up x raying his hips and hind legs. I just could not wait. If there was something wrong I had to know right then. Thank god everything looks normal and fine, she pointed out the growth plates and said they look ok also. Anyway, we got home and I felt much better. And then I remembered he fell and his hind legs did go into the pool the other day and he may have bruised himself. That is the only thing I can think of. New wrinkles today!!!!! Don't mean to whine just scared the p*ss out of me.

he is such a trooper he never shows a sign of hurting. Except at the vet. Guess that is a good place, If there is a problem. By the way Buckshot, having a fila is like having a dane at the vet's. They do not see that many of them and if they are loving and well behaved they will spoil the sh**t out of them. Brutus loves to go there. Well when we get past the front door. That is the only probelm we have. Have to lift this fifty pound dog, open the door and of course keep the purse on the arm at the sametime. I am sure you will have no problem with the purse though. Probably what made your vet worry is the weird Fila rear end. Remember, it's supposed to be significantly higher than the shoulders. Rarely will you find a vet who has any knowledge at all about these dogs and they'll freak out over perfectly normal Fila things. DO take Brutus (and Buckshot) in to visit with the vet and staff every week or two to get them used to being handled by the staff and make fast friends with everyone there. Remember, these are dogs who are not faulted when shown for not allowing the judges to touch them!

Your Fila should be a trooper. They don't have a pain response like other dogs. Even Pits seem sensitive to pain compared to a Fila.

Are they sensitive to tickling the hairs between their toes though?

Renee, have you heard of them having lick abraisions at the point of their umbilical? From the mother over doing it on the licking

I haven't heard of that happening, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything, and taking into account how obsessive these dogs are . . . I can e-mail Judy and ask her.

And yes, those big ol' webbed feet are very ticklish :D

Buckshot, does this mean you have your baby? Btw Renee, I am allowed to bring Brutus to the vet everyweek. The nurses sit on the floor and rub him all over and give him cookies. I do tend to agree with you about vets not knowing the fila's as well as some more common breeds. My vet is still determined I should put Brutus on Science diet, and does not think he should have extra vitamin c. This is the one thing we disagree on. And he has a lot of tickle spots she found that out yesterday when she was trying to get him to extend the back legs. My husband swears this was what was wrong with him. I don't really know but do think he may have some sore spots from the pool. But he has been playing and running ok. He had a rash on his tummy so she also gave him an antibiotic shot and sent him home with simplicef 200 mg. He has been peeing a lot this morning . Is this one of the side effects of this medicine?

I don't know if it's a side effect. Have you tried doing a search on it to read up on it? Make sure you get Brutus on some probiotics. These critters have really amazing systems and will throw most things off by themselves; antibiotics can really mess with the natural balance of their systems.

Don't be intimidated about the Science Diet. It's crap and vets like to sell it to you because it's a nice profit item for them - not only when they sell it to you, but later on when you have to deal with the side effects from the poor quality of the food

I will check with her. BTW dog food does make a difference. I ran out yesterday and it was to late to drive 2o miles to get innova so I ran to the local store and grabbed puppy chow. Omg, Brutus was bouncing off the walls, he also kept looking and barking at his empty bag of Innova. And he was bouncing again this morning. Hyper, hyper, I am leaving in a couple of hours to get his food. Cannot believe the difference in his behavour, and I cannot spell this morning. need more coffee.

I'd keep it up.

Anytime you've got any nutritional questions Mordy's your very best source. Vets should pay her to come and teach them!
The breeder where Im getting my Fila agrees with everything that I found from Mordy but directly conflicts with much vet advice. He said that the old school vets seem to be better dog nutitionists than the ones that are fresh into the field. He said that he thinks they put too much into their own beliefs of where they think their own food should come from and not consistent with what wild dogs eat. Meat, bones and stomach contents (fruits, vegetables and digestive fluids etc). I dont know how you feel about feeding human grade chicken and beef but I am finding that it really isnt going to be as expensive as I thought. If you get the meat a day or two passed the date on the package its very cheap.

Let's see, that would be nine o'clock mountain time?
Yes. I am holding out on the digital camera for a little while because its going to save me some cash and put money in the hands of someone who wants to earn it from me so... I will be taking some shots with my 35mm and getting them developed and put onto disc. I am still having issues getting my photos on the website because they are huge but I will work on that today.

My breeder was the one that suggested the ester c to begin with and he also believes in the fruit, vegies and meat also. But I have posted for Mordy.
It can get a bit confusing being a parent, especially when you have a breed that is not as well known. Oh, and congratulations bet you are getting excited about friday night. BTW that would be 8:00 my time. Get your drool rag ready for the first drink. Brutus ran up to this lady at the vet yesterday. She was standing at the door, and laid a string of slobber all over her leg. I had just wiped his mouth off before we went in. I apologized. She was sweet about it, just laughed. Thank god she was a dog lover. He also peed on the scale. Had to be nervous.
