I'd like to hear what everyone's opinions on rawhides are? I know some people are dead set against them, while others say they are OK. My little chi mix loves to chew them, but I'm heistant to give them to her.

I only give Toby compressed rawhide bones. I keep an eye on him while he's chewing til the bone starts getting ragged looking then I take it away so he can't actually eat any of it. I know he hates having it taken away but I am very paranoid about it causing a blockage if he were to eat it.

I just stay away from them all together and stick with Kongs, nylabones and raw bones.

We have them sitting around the house. The boys don't chew on them very often but when they do, they never ingest much. A medium sized bone lasts about 2-3 months around here, and I take it away after they've chewed it about 3/4 of the way down.

Buddy gets compressed rawhide bones and when they get small they get taken away. He also gets raw bones.

The only time they enter my home is if they are given as a gift.

I don't see the point in giving them - my three would much rather chew on a real bone, it's much tastier to them and has a greater nutritional value. Besides, rawhide tends to give dogs build-up/tarter on their teeth. I used to give them often until I realize how nasty their teeth were getting.

They now get free-range cow bones and their teeth are so much whiter because of it!

Chico loves rawhide bones. I just take it away when it gets small enough for him to swallow.

Teddy also loves rawhides. He always chews it well though. never just swallows big pieces. He gets into chewing moods and it has to be something that will show progress in his chewing lol. He doesn't chew on the kong because he can't tear it apart lol same with real bones, he will chew them till the flavour is gone (about a day and a half) and then won't ever touch them again.

They may be O.K. for small dogs , but I know Chip ( and past Goldens ) would have the big ones gone within an hour !!! One 3" piece can expand to a mass in the stomach!! Not worth the chance to me!!

Rawhide = BAD BAD BAD!!

Its not very digestable for dogs and can cause blockages if given in large amounts.

Riot has never had a rawhide and NEVER will. He gets "Bully sticks" instead. Much more healthy!

Plus, that white rawhide you see is bleached out to look like that.. I dunno how healthy that would be.

Would you eat it? lol I know I wouldn't :)

Teddy also loves bully sticks lol

and if rawhide stops them up then I would hate to see what Teddy would be like without rawhides ;) I have NEVER had a problem with them but he doens't h ave that need to chew quite as much as when he was younger. But he won't chew on real bones.

LOL summer riot. would you eat dog food?

I don't give them to my dog. I did let her have a "Cheweez's" brand a couple of weeks ago but when she started choking on a piece, I took it away and she will never have them again.
Bullysticks all the way! (**** expensive things!)

lol ohh thats nasty!

You know what smells worse though.. those big/cow hooves you can get for them.

I can't STAND the smell of them. Riot had one when he was younger and I swear he KNEW it stunk like rotting bum and would chew it consistantly RIGHT next to me or on my foot.. this is when he got that little treasure taken away and put into the garbage(which he tried retrieving a few times, and yes successfully). I'd walk into the room and smell it again and he'd be sitting in the corner knawing away at it lol

Just a side note... I know that some of you aren't in the US but for those of you that are you can find bullysticks in bulk at Costco.... $14 for a package of I think 10 or so. :)

My dogs don't get rawhides unless somebody give them to us which we do have happen sometimes but I don't like them. They're fully of stuff that is awful for dogs (so I've heard anyway) and they can choke easily (even when supervised). I'm not saying rawhide is awful, I don't have a lot of experience with them and I just prefer not to give them. Plus, they're useless...all they do is occupy the dog they don't help their teeth or anything at all. My dogs get nylabones for whenever they feel like chewing something and raw bones (they get raw bones atleast 4 times weekly).
