Dear Buddy,

It was one year ago today that I stood outside your cage at the Fresno SPCA. I walked up and down the puppy ‘aisle’ wanting to take every puppy home because I felt they all needed homes for Christmas. But, I stood outside your cage and found myself staring into your soulful eyes.

Your eyes were sad, but brimming with personality. Your head was nestled between your paws. I walked up to your cage, opened it and stuck my hand in. In an instant you were the newest love of my life…you were jumping up and down, licking my fingers, wagging your tail, saying, “take me home now.”

I took you into my arms and that was it. I pleaded for them to allow a late adoption as it was just slightly after 4pm and adoptions were over by 4 and I was heading to a new home 300 miles away.

The lady called the front desk and in her best pleading tone sweetly asked that I be allowed to adopt you. Obviously it worked.

I reluctantly gave you over to them again as you needed to have err, well that surgery and your last shots. I snapped photos of you with my camera phone and drove 300 miles to what would be our new home.

I literally paced the floors waiting for a call from them- telling me that you ready to come home. Oh, how excited I was. We got all of the necessities… bought toys, paced the floors. Finally, the CALL.

We were up and on the road the next morning at 6am. We got there just in time. We headed to the back to pick you up you were placed in my arms. You were happy to see us, licking our faces as if we had known each other for years. We walked to the truck and I put you in Dad’s lap and all of a sudden, our family was complete. We simply could not contain you. You wriggled and jumped, you kissed and you licked…you were ours and that was that.

We took you by Grandma’s work; we took you to see Grandpa at home. Everyone was excited about our wonderful Christmas gift.

Unfortunately, the joy of our Christmas gift ended for a brief amount of time when you became ill on Christmas day. It was obvious you were not well and in our hearts, we knew it was not good. We rushed you to an emergency vet hospital where you were given fluids to sustain you overnight and the next day, you were taken to American Animal Hospital.

You spent a week in intensive care, given a 70% of survival and even then, odds were not good. If you were to survive it could go either way- you would be a happy, healthy puppy or you could be a happy, unhealthy puppy.

You drew the short straw. You have been in and out of AAH so many times that I did not think my heart was capable of being broken and put back together so often. But still, you remain.

It's not been easy, oh dominant one. You cerainly gave 'daddy' and I a run for our money's worthy. But we have nestled into the routine of a happy family, just the eight of us  (including the rats and the cat and the fish of course). When we brought Banzai home, youo welcomed him into your heart and home like there had never been an option. And you are truly happy, I feel blessed.

You have taught me much about life, love and all that other stuff, my boy. You have been a precious being in my life, so much in fact that I am not sure how human I was before you came into my life.

I feel, at this time, Buddy, I can only reiterate what I have said before, I love...

...that I can say "Buuuuuuuuddyy Raaaay- Raaaaay" and my sweet little boy will come running, tail wagging, tounge hanging out of his mouth, to see me.

...that Buddy had the courage and will to battle and then survive parvo at such a young age, I can't imagine my life without him.

...that every so often I can look deep into his mysterious eyes and he into mine and we feel this connection, and then I know that he knows how much I love him.

...that he loves his pool so much but is just as eagerly afraid of the hose, haha.

...that sometimes I am blessed to feel his heartbeat on my chest when the 75 pound love bug still thinks he's a 20 pound puppy and lays on me.

...the joy and devotion he has brought to this family, he has taught us all to be fighters, to never give up. Even if left standing on what may seem the last leg of a battle it seems that Buddy has the power and drive to make it through whatever life brings him.

...that I have learned so much from a sweet dog in the last 7 months than I have learned in my entire lifetime.

...that he knows I am the sucker of the family, lol... his beautiful eyes look at me as though pleading for that last bite of whatever...poor thing, hardly gets it (he does get some human treats), but how I love him nonetheless.

...that I can't wait to get home from work to see him because I know he's waiting at the top of the stairs for my truck to rumble into the driveway.

...his fancy two-step (you know, the one called "mom's home") how great it feels to be so loved and missed after a long day's work.

...that he knows if he picks and throws his kong that it will get moms attention and I'll do my best to help him get that last bit of peanut butter.

...that when we play hide and seek and he fiinds me, it's like re-discovering our love all over again.

...that I have allowed "just a dog" into the very being of my soul and have allowed him to pitch his tent, for eternity. What a shallow being I would be without my Buddy...
I love you, Buddy Ray Ray Kelly.... thank you for pitching your tent, for eternity in the very core of my heart.

Love,
Mom

Oh my... that's so sweet, and bringing tears to my eyes... How is Buddy doing with the latest mange outbreak?
:) thanks... well, it definitely got worse, but I think it's 'stopped' growing now. Sorry for not updating everyone as I said we would, it's been busy. I'll post new pictures after the holidays of his face.
