About an hour ago, I was giving the dogs cookies, and I noticed Fozzie walk away and drop his on the floor... and just look at it. This is NOT anything that Fozzie has EVER done. He is a cookie fiend.

So I checked his teeth, they looked fine. Then I tried to open his jaw, and he yelped and jerked away. = ( I didn't see anything... his jaw just seems really tight, and painful, and I have no idea what could have caused this. He ate fine earlier today (and he hasn't even had any Raw today, so that definitely has nothing to do with it), and he seemed totally normal up until I was giving them cookies. Right before that, he was outside with Gonzo, and I noticed them "fence-racing" with the neighbor's dog... but I immediately called them in. Maybe he could have hurt his jaw somehow on the fence? I don't know.

A few minutes ago, Gonzo was shaking a Wubba around, and Fozzie ran up to play with him... but the second he tried to grab it, Fozzie yelped and slinked away. It just breaks my heart. I hate seeing him in pain... and his hurt pad a few weeks ago seemed bad enough.

I called his Vet, and he said to watch him tonight, and bring him in tomorrow morning if he isn't better. Has anyone gone through this with their dog, or have any idea what might be going on? I just want him to get better.

I know personally my jaw gets locked some times. It has been so bad before that it felt like it was cemented shut. My buddy punched me in the face and all was well again (this was an asked for punch. He was so reluctant to.) If that's the case with him I know exactly how he feels. Freaking sucks! Don't punch your dog in the face though. I'm sure he wouldn't like that.
:p

I wish you all the best. Keep me updated.

Yes, we had this exact thing happen to Bella... turned out it was a severe case of gingivitis. How she got it, I don't know. She now gets bones regularly.

Thanks, you guys. : ) I really hope he feels better tomorrow... or at least the Vet can figure out what to do.

Nicole, did it happen to Bella really suddenly, or did it seem progressive? Fozzie has never had an issue chewing or opening his mouth, at least that I've noticed. And his teeth are really white. But, he has had weird breath for a while. I hope it isn't anything serious.

This happened to brute a few nights ago... he had been playing and managed to knock himself stupid in the mouth when shaking and playing with a stuffed toy... he hit himself so hard... he didn't want food/biscuits or anything in his mouth for a few.. It seemed to go away within an hour or so.. next he was eating kibble and slathering me with nasty kibble strewn kisses..

hopefully he just smacked himself or something..

It happened suddenly. I went to pry her mouth open and she whined and that is so unlike her, she's normally pretty stoic, I mean, she lost an eye and was in some form of pain for a long time without really showing it. But anyways, yes, it was sudden. But I also noticed a smell...

Tenebrion, I REALLY hope that's what is going on... but I don't know. Fozzie is such a piggie. It's shocking to see him refuse anything edible.

Grammy, I have checked as well as I can. He cries and jerks away every time I try to open his mouth. But I don't see anything at all.

Nicole... Fozzie is very stoic about pain, too. He never yelps, ever. Maybe he does have gingivitis. He does eat RMBs nearly every day, but his breath has been strange ever since he got a few teeth pulled, during his neuter. It's not horrible, it's just kind of... eh it's hard to describe... metallic. I didn't really think anything of it, but maybe I should have.

It was a very distinct smell, too... It almost got to the point where I could not stand to be in the room while the evet was doing the exam. I mean, ick. Can you open his mouth at all?

As an alternate theory, Uncle Fred acted just like that and it turned out he had sprained his neck.l

DrMom, he seems to be moving his neck fine, and he doesn't mind me touching it.

Grammy, it was when he was 6 months old... and he's 2 now. hehe. I'm really grasping at straws here, trying to figure out what it could be.

Fozzie started acting a lot better last night. He ate any hard food I offered him, just a little bit slower than usual. Today, he doesn't seem to have gotten much better, and he refused to chew a cookie earlier. I don't know what to do. I talked to a Vet tech, and she's acting as though I'm over-reacting.

The vet tech doesn't know the dog like you do. it isn't like you just got him, you know what is normal for him and what is not.

Oh, I know... I really am a worrywart, but I KNOW there is something wrong when Fozzie doesn't inhale food! We have an appointment in the morning. I will keep this thread updated.

Gahhh. Our regular Vet wasn't in today... so they bumped it to tomorrow at 11. Fozzie still can't grab toys, but he zoomed around the house for a good hour, and he's been playing with Gonzo. No bitey playing, but they were wrestling a little. I'm glad he isn't mopey anymore, at least!

Cross your fingers for him! : )
