some guy leaves his 9 w old puppy alone for upto 9 hours a day ( mostly "just" 3-4, I question this and ppl get upset with me..???

call me crazy but to me that is messed up.
when you buy a dog your bying the responsibility for a life !
some one even suggested getting a litterbox for the dog cuz " it´s such a small dog !!
the only right thing in that statement is that it´s a DOG..
just because it´s a small one it doesnt mean it wont need fresh air and to run around OUTSIDE !
getting some exercice......

ppl who get dogs just to " have em " must not care to much about them..
so instead of getting defensive.. take a min to think about it, and hopefully you´ll have a lightbolb moment and see the freakin light !

i´m not saying that you should never leave your dog home alone, but hope fully that dog is much older then 9 w. and properly trained to be left.

 maria

sorry ´bout the spelling errors.

It's not about 'seeing the light' it's about being able to help dogs. By being open and encouraging people will hear us better. If you call them crazy and belittle them they will leave the forum and who does that help?

And I'm not talking about just this one situation.

Yes I did suggest Litterbox training.I think its better than confusing a pup with newspaper training.Small breeds can be taught it easily. That way the pup knows it has somewhere that is ok for doing its buisness.Instead of doing it all over.Of course it needs fresh air.I am sorry you dont like me and my posts but I think its better to give useful advice over telling them they have to get rid of their puppy.

i never said i dont like you...
but i think that if your away from home for such long periodes of time that you have to use a litterbox then u really shoulnd have a dog. sorry you have your opinion i have mine.

in his case i think he is unfit, and that he should find his dog a new, better home.. i and i pray he takes my advice.

i´m not really concerned with his feelings, i´m on the pups side

I've had dogs that were newspaper trained and it worked fine. Our Lhasa (Now deceased) was paper trained as a puppy and was left alone for at least 8-9 hours a day cuz my mom had to work and I had to go to school. He was fine and it wasn't hard to train him that way and no mess on the floor to clean up. He was kept gated in a hallway with a tile floor and when he got older and had the occasional accident, he always had it on the bare floors and never the carpet for the rest of his life (well, until he couldn't control himself anymore anyway!).
I did the same thing with Jack and it worked fine.

still think it´s sad that ppl get dogs when they have so little time for them that they have to " go" on the floor ( even if it is tiled )

the only time my dogs go longer than 4 hours without a pee walk is during the night when we are all sleeping, none of them has had an accident since they where 5 months.. they are now 10 m. and 19 m.
i am not working at the moment .. looking though and have made plans for whos gonna watch ´em while i´m at work.. sisters, neighbours, hubby and so on.

It really sounds like you want to fill the shelters up even more. As long as the pup is able to exercise and spend time with its owner then being left with a potty place and a few entertaining toys should be no big deal. Better then being PTS or living outside 24/7.

Alot of people have jobs that keep them away for eight hours a day, me included. That doesn't make them bad pet owners. Working is life unfortunantly. If I could spend all day with Toby I would, but I have to pay the bills too. He is by no means neglected and I think he has a great life with me.

there must be alot of ppl who would take better care of it and if not then put the dog to sleep..
sitting in a crate full of it´s own urin all day is no life..

i understand that your situation in the US ( with dogs ) is out of controll..
in sweden where i live it´s next to impossible to get a pure bred dog from a shelter.. and even the mixed dogs costs more then most ppl could pay without planning for it.

when it´s so easy to get a puppy i think its much to often an impuls buy and not a planned and thought trough dessition( spelling ? ) like it really needs to be..
in sweden we also have laws about crating.. meaning they cant be in one for to long..
we also have laws about leaving a dog tied in the backyard for to long ( i think it´s like 60 min. ) and only if they are tied up in a good way with acces to water , shelter and shadow.
not saying that all swedish dog owners are perfect far from it, but if i found out about some1 doing what this guy is doing.. i would report it , no doubt.

and why is no1 telling this guy that a puppy dosnt have full bladder control untill it´s about 15 w..

i´m not 100 % sure about the laws.. they might just be recomandations..but i dont think so.

What makes you think the puppy or dog is sitting in urine. That is why the litter box paper training was suggested. I think you are just interested in creating controversy because it makes no sense to me. PTS because someone works, get real! How would anyone pay for the dog food, vet bills and toys if they did not work?

i´m not trying to do anything exept trying to comunicate my point..
i said it´s sitting in it´s urin Bcuz the guy i´m talking about said that the dog urinates in it´s crate.. and if the dog is in there for hours on end then my conclution is that the poor pup is sitting in his own urin all day.

anything else ?

I´m not being rude
but alot of ppl seem to be taking what i´m saying very personally ...
i´m sure most ppl here are good owners.. i´m only saying that no way is this guy one of them.

Are you talking about me? Because I have mentioned that small dogs can be litter trained. But I never meant it like the dog should be kept inside all day, I meant it like if you're gone and can't get home in time to bring the dog out to go to the bathroom, there's the litterbox for it to use. That way your dog doesn't have to hold it long and/or you don't have to clean up a mess on the floor. Of course dogs should be outside!! In my opinion, they should spend at least two hours outside, whether it be running, playing, or sleeping, they need fresh air. I think all animals need fresh air, whenever I get a cat I plan on walking it lol.

Hire a dog walker or doggy daycare!
Yup. Unless you want a sandbox in your laundry room, lol. My dogs are all too big to litter train, we're with them most of the time, always think of them before we leave. They go outside for at least fifteen minutes to run and go to the bathroom and then they come back in. Either May or Tippy has to be put in a room or crated or they tick eachother off and get into a tussle :(

'That guy' has huge crates that are too big for his dog. Too big to be used for crate training which is why the dog goes in it - because it doesn't have to sit in it. There's too much room.

I NEVER said that a small dog shouldn't be let outside to go to the bathroom. I said they are small enough to use a litterbox, so if you cannot get home in time from work to let the dog outside to pee, the dog has a litterbox to pee in. If you have a large dog and cannot get home on time to let the dog out to pee, you can hire a dog walker to take him out to pee. You can hire a dogwalker to care for your small dog if you want to, too. Whatever you want to do. You can hire a dog walker or litter train your dog. Your choice.

My dogs are crated and they love their crates. Those are they're favorite napping spots. It's also a safe way to bring them on car rides.

It's really annoying when people come here bashing at others when they don't even know a thing about what they're bashing

Agreed completely.

My [now] two are crated when we leave the property. THey are loose the rest of the time, except if I am unable to watch Storm like a hawk then I crate him. Storm is not house trained yet and it is not his fault that no one bothered training. I am training him and it is going fairly well. If I have to go away they come with me, crates and all. THere are so many dog friendly hotels that I see no reason to not bring them. I am a stay at home mom though so rarely do we go away.

You have laws about crating  , do the animal control officers have warrents to check every ones homes while they are at work! . They also must sit with a stop watch and observe every ones dogs in the yard. That is outlandish and ridiculous to even think that animal control would ever have this much time to oversee any laws like this.
I have a friend in Holland who can tell me what the animal control laws are. I am definately going to forward this post on to him and inquire if this is true. It's a little outlandish.
