I'm sure it won't be long before US citizens need a passport to come to Canada. Are you sure they don't already? Canada and the US have a very Do Unto Another ... relationship.
I'm pretty sure the beginning of the year is when we will have to have passports to get into Canada. My family and I went to Alberta in August and we had to bring a form of I.D. and our birth certificate to cross the border.

Edit: I do not have a passport. :)

Actually, I don't believe it becomes "official" for Canadians to have a passport into the US until 1Jan07, but they MAY have pushed that back. I have heard nothing about US citizens having to have a passport to get into Canada.

I get the impression that it's a "do unto others" relationship if Canada instigates........

I have a passport but so far haven't left the continent. For graduation my folks are talking about sending me to Europe to travel for a couple months and possibly pick up another dog. I'm excited about that.

My parents have the means to send me places, but I am BROKE and imagine it'll be 20+ years before I ever have the money on hand to vacation/travel that often. It's expensive to leave this country. In Europe, it's much easier to travel around because you have more than three countries on your continent ;)

yeah I think it goes both ways.

The last time I came through the US was on my way back from Chile. I stopped in LA to switch plans and they stamped my passport. That was 3.5 years ago and I don't know if they needed it or not but they sure had that stamp handy. It probably just makes things faster.

I have had a passport since I was around 3 years old. My little brother was 9 months when he went on his first 18 HOUR international flight. However in defense of people who've never been outside the US. I think a lot of people outside of America fail to grasp just how big this continent is. Traveling from one end of this country to the other is a major change in cluture, climate, everything. By the time I drive up the coast of CA an equivalent drive in Europe would have probably taken me through 3 countries

Got a passport here---I'm a confessed vagabond---just love to travel. I've traversed the globe to many obscure locations and when the opportunity presents itself, I'm gone, in fact, during Christmas I'm venturing to Macchu Pichu (again) in Peru. Bon Voyage!!!

I have one. I have to say I was amused at seeing this topic pop up again. It's a favorite for non-Americans, and it's going to be totally obsolete soon, since we're going to need passports for travel to Canada and the Carribbean soon, which will send Americans passport-ward in droves. But really, I don't quite see how simply owning a passport means you're well-travelled. The vast majority of people who visit the US from abroad each year come to Vegas and Disney. That's hardly impressive.

In all of my world travel I was in the military so my military ID was my passport to the countries I really didn't want to go to. But once I was out I had to get a passport to go to Mexico with my husband on our honeymoon.

Ahhh had to investigate for myself.

New Requirements for Travelers

Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)

The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:

On January 8, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
My bad, but they only need it for air travel starting in 2007.. interesting. I now feel educated. ;)

And my passport was specifically for European travel - I think if I ever had that big sum of money again to be able to travel somewhere, I would leave the continent again - the US is always going to be there, I have connections all around, I can do that someday if I so choose but Europe is far more exciting for me! eeeee.

I have one obviously, seeing I needed one to come here, although that was 4 years ago. And obviously I still need one to go back visit my family in France (although we haven't been in 2 years).

Let's face it though, Europeans have it easy. I've been to lots of countries, but from America it just costs so much to go anywhere. Definitely a shame though, it's probably why so many people here seem to be totally unaware that there are other countries in the world.
