no, farmers don't pay a lot of money, but they often breed their own successor working dogs, or get a new one from another farmer nearby. these dogs aren't manipulated and overbred.
since you are interested in this topic, i highly recommend the book "dogs : a new understanding of canine origin, behavior and evolution" by ray and lorna coppinger. it's one of the most fascinating books on the topic of dogs i've read.
the decision to bring dogs in for yearly vaccines is completely arbitrary, and as new research shows, unnecessary. it's yet another field where misinformation is widespread and people don't have easy access to correct information. things are looking up since all the vet schools in the US officially changed their protocols tho.
