Winston took a bad fall last night, but we didn't worry too much, as we helped him up and he seemed fine. Just a bit stiff, but he's fallen lots of times as he's 10 now (and poorly bred with terrible hips) and isn't very sturdy in his back end anymore. Anyhow, when we got home he just wanted to lay down and rest.. which was fine. That's what he does most days anyway. But then he got up this morning and could barely move and just didn't look very happy. So I crated him to make sure he didn't try to run around with the girls and to give him some rest, thinking that he'd be better later on in the day. I thought he'd just sprained his shoulder or something. I let him out of his crate around 2:00pm to go outside and try to get him to eat something as he didn't eat breakfast this morning, and he went out and layed down after he made it down the steps with my help. He never lays down outside on the cement. Then I went and brought him some food and he could barely chew. He finally got some scrambled eggs down though (the only thing I could get him to somewhat willingly eat). He progressively got worse throughout the day. My mom got home from work at 5:00pm and took him to the Vet at 5:30pm when we noticed his gums were almost as white as white could be and he was acting extremely lathargic. Anyway, it's 7:00pm now and my mom just called and told me that the vet thinks he had some sort of tumor inside that burst with his last fall and he thinks he has an internal bleed (not surprising... he's always getting new visible lumps. Who knows what's all inside). He's not very optimistic that he'll make it through the night at this point. My mom is taking Winston for a second opinion at a friend's Vet to see what he says though... hopefully it's better news. I can't help but cry and think the worst, no matter how optimistic I try to be. It seems like one dog after another, after another dies within just months of eachother these past few years and its just too much.

Anyway, that's all I know at the moment as my mom wouldn't let me go to the vet's with her. Can you please spare some good thoughts for our boy?

ETA: It just seems so weird to me that he could be perfectly fine one moment, and the next he's (according to the vet) almost to the point of dying. If it is what the vet thinks it is, wouldn't there have been other signs previous to this?

:) Thanks you guys. He'll be back home soon. My mom just called and said that the prognosis is not good, but it's better than what the other vet suspected. This vet is going to do some sort of blood tests tomorrow to confirm, but he's 99% sure that Winston has malignant Histiocytosis. If that is that case, the only thing he can do for him is to put him on Prednisone and hope for the best. He could live a week, or he could live a year. Our vet thought the same thing apparently but my mom forgot to tell me that over the phone the first time she called, but he's known us for 15yrs and so was very blunt and to the point whereas this one made it sound a little more "positive". Not that having this disease is a positive thing, but at least we know he'll be around for a little while longer.

Oh, and he's had this disease a long time probably but we'd have never known it. The only reason it took a turn for the worst today is because of the shock he went through during his fall. He's not injured from that in the slightest.

Thank you, Grammy. :)

Here are a couple of pictures of him taken about 20 minutes ago. As I took these, I realized that I hardly ever take any pictures of him.. and I plan to change that now.

Thanks again everyone. :)

Oh those eyes !!!! How did he fall ???
He was playing with another Doberman and Dance and got a little too rambunctious and ran too fast onto the deck from the grass. He's just old and not very steady on his back legs. It doesn't take much for him to slip and fall these days, unfortunately.

I wish there was something I could give him to make him feel better/back to normal. He's so weak and can hardly stand for more than a 5 minutes. He is better than yesterday though, so I guess that's good. Hopefully tomorrow will be better..

Jenn, we might be in Saskatchewan then, but if we're not, I'm sure we can find a way for you to meet him. :)
