Some of these replies are hilarious! I'll respond to some of those regarding Chows (my beloved and perfect breed .. *G*).

Zoom: 2.) Chow Chow-Dinner!

As you probably know, the Chow is a very ancient breed and has provided their people with a variety of services throughout the years. They were herding dogs, sled dogs, packed and guarded - and those who didn't work out were used for their meat and fur. How much more versatile can a breed get??

MK&C: 2.) Chow Chow- rawr...I'll eat you...

Unfortunately, like so many other breeds, the Chow became very popular at one time and was bred indiscriminately to supply cute fuzzy puppies to people who felt they just HAD to have one. And because of that, temperaments went all to h*ll. This is not a breed for a beginner in many ways anyhow. They have a tendency to be extremely independent and to be aloof and not necessarily outgoing. But a proper chow has a nice solid temperament and has the ability to tell the difference between a friendly person and a threat. The breed standard states that shows of aggression and/or timidity are not acceptable.

caseyolee: 2.) Chow Chow- Unstable minds, long hair, brown, aggressive, untrustworthy.

These are typical misconceptions of the breed. There is nothing unstable about a properly bred and handled chow. They are exquisitely intelligent dogs, with a deep sense of attachment to their people. While independent, they can be trained by someone with patience and a good knowledge of dog behavior and proper reinforcement. I trust all three of my chows 100% and anyone at the vets or groomers should be able to handle them without fear of a growl or a bite.

By the way, there is also a smooth coat (short coat) chow that looks somewhat like a shar pei without so many wrinkles. The chow also comes in a variety of colors: red and black are the most common, with the red shading from cream to a deep red; also acceptable are cream (from nearly white to biscuit color), blue and cinnamon. There's even a person who comes on this board on occasion who has a brindle chow - quite unusual!

Renee750il: 2.) Chow Chow- Wooly Booger

Yep .. *G* .. that fur can be a deterrent to ownership for a lot of people! But with a good diet and occasional brushing my chows stay tangle free. They shed much less than my shepherds do! Not only that, but chow undercoat makes excellent yarn .. I have bags of fur ready to be woven .. *LOL*

RD: 2.) Chow Chow- Brilliant, independent and watchful

Ahhh, RD, THANK YOU for such a good response to a breed that I love and admire! This is really an amazing breed and I've come to really respect the potential and ability that a good chow has. I look at what my dogs have accomplished - sometimes in spite of my mistakes - and I am so thankful that I accidentally ended up with a chow pup 14 years ago.

Like so many have said, the chow is a teddy bear looking dog with a black tongue. They are certainly adorable as puppies and grow into an impressive looking dog. But they are also a very intense breed in some ways. They do tend to be extremely alert, and in fact in my house the chows are the ones that guard while the shepherds sleep .. *L* .. the shepherds have learned that the chows will alert to a moose or car in the driveway, and the chows are ALWAYS the first to respond to something. Then the shepherds jump up and come to the rescue.

The level of intelligence in this breed is quite high too. Chows are thinkers. When teaching a similar behavior to the chows or to the shepherds, the chows will usually figure it out more quickly than the shepherds (who are too busy trying to figure out all the possible things I might want them to do .. *L*). But the chows are more likely to decide they have something better to do later on, while the shepherds will do a behavior over and over more consistently. Intelligence is not the problem with the chow, it's the desire to work with their person (or lack of desire) that makes them seem less trainable.

Okay, enough about this breed! It's not for everyone, but I know I will never be without a chow in my life.

Oh - and as far as casablanca goes .. that person didn't have much nice to say about any breed of dog listed. I'm wondering why they're even on a dog forum with that kind of attitude .. *shaking my head*

Yep, but someone who has a negative thing to say about every breed .. well, why are they on a dog forum?

A lot of people had somewhat negative comments about certain breeds, due to experiences or maybe misconceptions. But to say something nasty about breed after breed tends to make me think a person doesn't like dogs at all - either that, or they're just being inflammatory.

Just my ever-popular opinion .. :D

Just want you to know that wasn't meant insultingly, Melanie :) I've just always thought that if I ever ended up with a Chow I was going to call it Wooly-Booger :D

I'm with ya on the shedding! I've had German Shedders ever since I was 12 - one was a champion Shedder, a GSD/Akita mix  Now Bear had HAIR!

Well, there were so many people already on the thread who were being sooooooo serious and PC about it. It sounded like the AKC's guide to breeds, where every breed is loyal, smart, and good with family members. I don't dislike the breeds listed (though most of them weren't really my kind of dogs, seeing as I like shaggy mutts and collie types) but I was trying to honestly and somewhat jokingly say what my initial reaction is when I see one coming toward me and my dog.

IlamniasQuest, I'm sorry, but I really think it's stupid you're throwing a fit over what people have said. It's NOT a huge deal. As I'm sure you will notice, I'm not very fond of Chows. I HAVE had bad experiences with these dogs and just their general temperament I do not like.

EDIT: I didn't know I posted my answers already *bang bang head* :p

Exactly where did I "throw a fit over what people have said"? If you're talking about my post regarding chows, I said the replies were hilarious - and I posted because the OP had asked us to now post some facts about our breeds.

So, please - tell me where I threw a fit. I've given my opinion, definitely, but I sure don't see how anyone could have interpreted my words the way you evidently have.
