Two questions kinda built into one...

1) Realizing that no place is better than home...how long do you think it is acceptable to board a dog for a period of time? (Assuming it is a good facility)

2) Do you travel a lot without your dog? Or are there times where you do NOT travel because you do not want to board your dog/have no one to take care of him/her? Or just...do you not travel cause you don't like to?

This just came about cause we have to board Oakley for 10 days at the beginning of July...we have no other choice.

I am studying abroad, so is my bro. The rest of my fam is going abroad for my evil cousin's wedding.

Also, my family and I were having a discussion about people who have never really left their hometowns, and never get out and experience other cities, and how they have a very biased view of what is normal because of that. Then my dad was bitching about how whenever we travel, we have to pay for Oakley to be boarded somewhere...soo yeah

1. 2 weeks for a 'fun' trip, 3 weeks if it's absolutely necessary for you to go and you can't make other arrangements. If it's over that, then IMO it's your responsibility to bring your pet with you... I have problems with people who leave their pets in care like that for long periods of time. It just looks like neglect to me.

2. We never go on vacations. :p Well, very seldom. Last time we went on a real vacation was 3 years ago.

1) The longest I have boarded the dogs was for 8 days, while we were gone to a dog show in Montana nad could only take 3 dogs with us.

2) I never travel unless its to a dog show, so atleast some of the dogs go with us.

I love traveling. Thankfully I was able to travel a lot in my late teens... so I've seen a lot. Now, I mostly travel home to Germany and to some surrounding countries. If my husband and I go together, we stay for about 2 weeks. Other than that, he is home and takes care of the "kids". If we go somewhere for a couple of days we take them with us.

We like to travel to, and plan to do a lot more in the next few years!!!! When we go somewhere, we have Greg's mom watch the dogs. Chloe would be fine to board at a good facilty, but I couldn't eever board Jackson Browne. He wouldn't tolerate it at all.:(

I LOVE to travel too. I've been on holiday each year with the family up until the past few years, they've gone to LA, New York ect and I stayed at home with Casey, We've been to Scotland and down South as well though where Casey could come with us. The last time I went abroad was to Rhodes when I was 14. However they are thinking about going to India this year and I want to go with them so badly, so the choice is go with them and leave Casey with friends or stay at home with Casey and I don't know what to do.

You can't beat travelling though!

omg, there is no choice...GO TO INDIA!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't imagine not traveling...I love it. And I don't mean "stay in a hotel in a different city" kind of traveling...we always explore the cities we go to..

Sometimes we will just drive an hour or 2 to go to some city or festival...just to see something different. Its not THAT often since we are all so busy, but I'll never forget last summer when my mom read about some "fish sandwich" festival in the newspaper. We were in the car an hour later...drove for 2.5hrs just to eat some fried fish sandwich in some quaint little town. It was nothing special...especially compared to places in Europe and what not, but it is just really cool to see how people live their lives so differently...even though they are sooo close to you!

I like travel, but not for more than a month or so. I love spending summers in Idaho but that's not travel to me, that's home.

If I traveled outside the country, I would feel okay about boarding Dakota, but I need to have Eve with me and Ripley wouldn't board well at all - if he got out, he'd be GONE. The only places I would consider boarding him are my vet's office (very secure kennels and knowledgeable staff) or a place in Gilbert.

There are some times when I don't travel because I don't want the dogs to be boarded. Eve will fly for free in the cabin but Dakota would have to be flown in cargo (no, no, NO.) and it would be $100 or something for Ripley to be in his carrier under the seat.

We don't board the dogs and I don't see us doing it unless it was absolutely necessary. I hate traveling as well, the most we've gone away for is three or four days. Home is where I belong.

Does living in other countries count? I've seen Egypt top to bottom four times now. Been all over South America and I've even been to Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Italy.

That's all spread out over the last ten years.

I don't currently have a dog. But if I was ever going to go for a big long trip I could leave the dog with my parents. Of course it's a 13 hour drive to take the dog there, but it could be done, and they live near enough major airports to make it worth wile.

I never board my dogs... Luckily from where I am it's a car ride to many, many countries.

I have got my dogs onto the pet passport scheme as well so that they can come with me when I go on jaunts to the UK.

While I was growing up my parents didn't get/want a dog on purpose because we traveled because of the exact situation you describe. They didn't feel it would be fair to the dog to board it for 2-3 weeks at a time.

As a result they/were able to go to alot more places and have less worries.

We would end up gone somewhere for basically 2-3 weeks in july and 2 in august. Be kinda hard on the dog, I'd think, to have it boarded that long and that often in a short period of time.

That's why I was told we could never have one. Granted we did travel like every summer for trips to the states for like a month.. Wouldn't have been able to go as many places with a dog possibly at a camp site..

As an adult, I pick friends who have dogs to go visit though.. And it's okay. But my parents did have a point when I was 16 and whining ;)

Yep, same here.

Us kids were always sent away to camp for a few weeks to a month...my parents didn't want to be the ones stuck taking care of the dog.

Our vacations/trips where we are ALL gone, are almost never over 10 days...and usually only 3-4 days.

Luckily Oakley is a LOT less high maintenance in the summer...the heat totally kills his energy...so it makes it totally doable for my parents to manage him while us kids are gone.

We always took whatever animals we had with us on vacation (cats, dogs, birds). We're just taking a cat with us this year (she'll destroy the house if we leave her) and a friend is going to watch the horses, dogs and other cats for us so we don't have to board anyone.
As kids, the only pet we had was a Siamese cat who liked to yowl non-stop in Dad's ear while he drove - Dad couldn't say anything though because he's the one who wanted a Siamese in the first place. Ming was leash-trained and boy, did we get some funny looks while we were out walking him!

I know its stupid not to go but I've got really bad at leaving Casey now, I got her her pet passport which is fine if we go by boat or car but I'm not going to fly her.

Anyway where abouts in the UK are you heading too?
