Chloe has a *slight* heart abnormality

I took her to her new vet (which I absolutely love by the way) for a check-up and her heartworm test..

Well, he listened to her heart and said it sounded abnormal and this is what he said :
The sound in her heartbeat is likely a "split heart sound", basically two sounds normally superimposed upon one another that are slightly apart. However, the possibility of a genuine heart murmur can NOT be ruled out..
So, we decided when she goes in for her next rabies shot, he will listen to it, and then we will decide if a EKG, or Ultrasound needs to be done...

*So please send some good thoughts our way*

Aww, I hope Chloe will be all right. Hopefully this is something that won't really bother her. And wow, 53 lbs? She's a big girl now!

Did he say what area of the heart this murmur is?

Did he grade it with a number? (1 is softest, 4 or 5 can sometimes be heard without a stethoscope)

If it were my dog and there were anything suspect, I would be going for a doppler exam pretty quickly to rule out anything serious, and/or to find out if it IS serious, so you can begin treatment.

Many issues can be very successfully treated with drugs.

At MINIMUM I would be going to a Veterinary Cardiologist for a careful auscultation (listen with a stethoscope).

he didnt say what area it was and he didnt give it a grade...he just told me that what they usually did was an EKG or an Ultrasound...

But its definitely not something that I'm taking lightly....

Just curious.. why didn't he do an ultrasound right then? Or EKG?

I dont know why he didnt do one right then......

But when she goes back to get her rabies shot which is around the first of FEB. we are going to discuss making an appt. to get one done....

EDIT: well, obviously this wasnt something that I expected to hear, so we just discussed the options today....

sorry, but this has thrown me for a loop, because I dont know why my old vet didnt catch it..:(

Jess,

I'm speaking from a certain level of knowledge since certain heart issues are found in Rottweilers.

I have had 2 dogs dopplered, and one auscultated twice for regular heart certification.

I would strongly advise 2 things:

1) Go to a cardiologist. If you are going to spend money spend it on a specialist who can either diagnose, or put your mind at ease and tell you nothing is wrong.

2) Don't wait.

It is very likely nothing at all, so going ahead with the diagnostics will put your mind at ease. A cardiologist can probably hear what is necessary with just the stethoscope, so it would not be too expensive.

I'll keep good thoughts for you. I have a friend who recently went through the same thing. She had a recheck on the dog and it was absolutely nothing, and got her heart clear certification.

Thanks Red....

The new vet that I go to is able to have cardiac (sp) specialist come on-site and give consultations...so Im going to call next week and figure out something :(
