H1N1 deaths are generally older people, or people with already compromised immune systems that even a common cold might kick. 6000 confirmed cases, yes, but most of those have been treated and the people are fine. It's much like the regular flu, it just doesn't have a vaccine yet.
And from my understanding, the H1N1 actually seems to be more likely to infect young people. The belief is that the older generations must have lived through an outbreak of a flu that was close enough to H1N1 that they already have some immunity to it. I think it is mainly the very young, and obviously the immune compromised, that are at risk of major issues. For many healthy teens/young adults, it doesn't come across as worse than any other flu.

Perhaps I'm crazy (perhaps?), but I don't intend to get the vaccine when it is available. I have always had a great immune system, have had the regular flu exactly once in my adult life, and prefer to build up my immune system the natural way.

I'll run it by family members who are very heavily involved in research in infectious diseases, but that is my current plan.

At my age I'll defiantly take the vaccine if/when available . During the 20s / 30s the most who died were the young and the elderly . Visit graveyards if that era ....whole families wiped out .

I don't plan on getting it either, so I'll jump on the crazy bandwagon :lol-sign:
I also didn't get the vaccine for the regular flu. Partially because I HATE needles, I will do anything to not get them :p Mainly, though, because I have no reason. My immune system is strong, I was never one of those kids that my parents chased around with a can of Lysol and freaked when I got dirty :D If I get the vaccine, how will my immune system get any stronger?

IMO... if you want to get the vaccine that is YOUR choice and don't let ANYONE else make you feel stupid for it. they aren't resonsible for your life so screw waht they think... and VICE VERCA. if you choose not to get it don't let anyone else make you feel stupid for it... again it is YOUR LIFE not theirs.

I don't know WHY people are so intent on arguing this kind of stuff. NO ONE is stupid for getting it or NOT getting it. leave them alone... they aren't making YOU get it.

not really, just take care of yourself. Unless you're living in a tent camp with no clean water, food and cramped 10 to a tent and have HIV, get on with life.
Oh, I see. So I must just get on with it and not worry about a woman who is very dear to me? A woman who is my domestic worker, who live in an informal settlement, 5 people in a one bedroom shack with no running water?
Oh, ok. Good to know. I will just stop worrying. Thanks!

South Africa does have a health care system. A crappy, overloaded health care system with massive waiting lists. You are only admitted when you are critical. By that stage, it is too late.

I have purchased viral guard and vitamins for Flora, her husband and her three children. I DO NOT want them getting sick, regardless of whether I am being stupid or not.

Our health minister has put out an epidemic warning because H1N1 is spreading faster here then it did in the rest of the world. Am I worried about me dying if I get it, no. I don't want to get it before I go on holiday for a week. That would be pretty crappy. But I AM VERY worried about Flora and her family.

Let's not be too dramatic now PD. The majority of victims for Swine Flu in South Africa are from the St Stithians, St Cyprians (private) type schools - the ones who have been travelling out of the country. It is far less likely for a person from an informal settlement to contract the virus. It is also unjust to say that it is spreading around South Africa far quicker than the rest of the world because well that is just not true! Another fact wrong in your dramatic-ness is that there are 3500 reported cases of the virus - NOT 6000. Although 3500 is still a lot we should not blow things out of proportion.

Um, no. I heard on the news today that the infection rate is up to 6000 due to non reported cases in the eastern cape. 3 of the victims were from the eastern cape and one from kwazulu natal. Only ONE person from the western cape. So, St Cyprians, no. Do not know where you are getting your information from.

Oh, and before you jump on and go at an established member, it is generally best to introduce yourself to the forum first.

Anyone who is a fan of marmite HAS to be a pretty sensible person and should be held in high regard!

Err, dunno... define established?

I've been here a long time. But I am not sure if that makes me established or not. I mean, I haven't got a chaz empire or anything.

I can only assume you're from the UK?

Tescos - cheese counter. Marmite cheese. Do it... It's only a small roll (tiny), but you must be able to buy big ones somewhere.

With regards to the established quip. Call it a little assistance. You will not make yourself overly popular if your first couple of posts are just there to nitpick on memeber that have been here and contributing for a few years.

To be fair I think members should all have equal rights to say what they feel regardless of post count or years joined.

Censoring posts based on that just breeds a cliquish atmosphere where newbies are afraid to post. That's sort of like the old saying "children should be seen and not heard".. Does it matter how long someone has been a member? If they have a valid point to put across it should be taken on the same level as any member.

It's not always about making friends on forums, sometimes it's all about the discussion.

Just my 2p.

Well, I generally feel an introduction is usually the way to go when coming into any community. Hi, my name is so and so. It is called manners. Anyone is more then welcome to disagree with me. You know that Dizz. It would just be nice if they did so with the correct facts, as well as with a little common decorum.

I can understand that if someone came on posting "all you chaz people are tits", but I think just jumping into a convo or debate is totally acceptible.

I mean, it's a discussion on the internet, no point people missing out adding their points just because they don't have X amount of posts.

People may have something useful to add :)

Anymawho - how dull would the world be if we we're all clones eh?

But I thought everyone on Chaz were tits! LOL!

Yeah, I do get you. It was the tone of the post that rubbed me the wrong way. Sure, disagree with me, but at least be polite and have yer facts straight.

Just heard, the third pregnant woman has just died in the Eastern Cape. That brings the death toll to 8 as of today.
