All ANIMALS CORRECT each other no matter what animal it is!!
Yup, they do correct each other. Wally corrects Teeny ALL the time. But I have never seen him pick up a stick and beat the hell out of her. Nor has he ever left bruises or caused her to "sting" because he can correct her WITHOUT physical harm.

I have never laid a hand on Kona. Never. I have never done anything more than say "Kona NO!". My dog is one of the most well behaved, sweet, and obiedent dog you will meet. She can be in the other end of the fields next to my home, and will come to me like a bat out of hell when I call her.

I did this all without laying a hand on her.

And to the Mr. whatever your name is, come on down to NC and try to show your "training methods" on my dog. First time you'll hit her is the last time you'll be able to use your hands again.

My point:

All ANIMALS CORRECT each other no matter what animal it is!!

Richling finally comes!!!:hail: :hail:
Some people really need to do some observation with their own eyes. Dogs dog not correct eachother the way you think they do. The alpha dog does not 'correct' other dogs with physical violence as a general rule. The alpha dog does not need to. They can correct with a look, a lip curl etc. Dogs in a pack (and yes I am aware that domestic dogs don't form stable packs, but they do hang with familiar dogs) don't (unless something is wrong) damage each other. We have pointed this out to you before, but you don't listen.

Take another animal, horses. Yes there is the odd kick and bite, but no harder than what they do in play. Now you put a strange horse in a field and yes they can get nasty. But we are talking about animals that live together. Other than humans and rats I can't think of any animal that harms members of its family group. (barring environmental stress, sickness etc)

So to say animals correct each other with violence isn't accurate. Yes, if they are fighting for breeding rights, territory etc. Not if they are living in a gregarious social grouping. You train your dogs like they are your enemy and you must enslave them.

So before you go off spouting things as fact..do some research please.

*oh just thought of an example...Dekka 'corrected' Smudge a while ago. I was making up the dog's dinners. All the dogs were away except smudge and dekka. Dekka was standing quietly watching me. Smudge was being a puppy lol. He walked over to Dekka and head butted her. Dekka lifted her lip. He proceeded to lower his head and tried to walk under her (and he is taller than her) She turned and sounded like she was killing him. He screamed and peed. Now the interesting thing is it was all noise...Dekka tried to stand over top of him (she is smaller so that didnt work so well lol) and made evil noises. She never used teeth or any physical force. Do you think he will ever try to walk under a JRT again? Not likely. Did he show any fear of Dekka the next day, nope. Did Dekka hurt him, nope. So even my JRT can train another dog without using force...but you, a human, cannot?

I am sorry I did not come back on last night!! Mr Richling, welcome! I am thrilled that you actually took the time to respond. Hopefully this is really you, we have had people play some odd games at times. It's important to hear both sides and I believe that you expressing your views openly might help clear some of the misconceptions here up. I am hoping you will come back and participate on this forum. There are a lot of professional trainers, breeders, veterinarians and competitors as well as devoted pet owners here and as you've read we all like a good debate! Lol. All negative statements aside, you have one student who is very supportive of your methods and one who left rather disgruntled. I am hoping you will clarify some of the issues over this and speak a little about your training background, the level you train to in obedience and speak to the group about your methods and success of your program. There is a lot of speculation as to what you really do and you truly are the only one that can clear that up! Again, welcome to Chaz and I look forward to your input.

yep. and a dog will correct a dog on how to be a dog by acting like a dog. But those things don't include a lot of the things people want their dogs to do. So people training a dog usually means we are asking the dog to sometimes not act like a dog but to follow human rules. therefore our training and correction methods need to change accordingly.

He did come but he isn't going to help you out here. He is attempting to use the same type of "manhandling" tactics with us that he uses with his dogs. He doesn't have what it takes to intelligently discuss his tactics in publiuc so he turns to bullying and dictation.

If he was half of what you think him to be he could discuss these issues on a dog training forum.

The voice of reason again, well said.
I too look forward to that debate but I don't think it will happen if that is really him. Waiting............

Mr Richling, I have to run. Busy day in kennel. If you prefer, you can respond to my inquiries via personal email, but may I have your permission to post your response for our other members, if we correspond? I think what you have to say is important and your response will either clear up some myths about your training or prove a few points here. Either way, I'd like Purdue to be to participate in our conversation as he seems very dedicated to supporting your program and I am always in favor of students getting as much info as possible about different aspects of training before committing to a trainer. I'm sure you agree, having your students best interests in mind is always important and being willing to clear up any concerns before one leaves your program, as our one person posting did, is always good business. Again, looking forward to your response. Have a good day.

Then how is it one can withhold frustration when training a dog. And practice and preach patience. Yes you have tried to educate, never said you didnt but do you honestly think this "You sound like an excellent recruit for one of the wacked Militate groups." is going to make your argument more plausable.
I'll admitt it wasn't a nice thing to say, but I do believe there is some truth to it or I wouldn't have said it. And your right, it doesn't make my argument more plausable. Anyone that knows me, knows that I can blunt to a fault sometimes.

[mod edit: that's because it's against the forum rules to post your phone number or email. Please don't do it again.]

I am more than happy to prove to any person on earth that my methods are indeed humane (by definition of the word) and that others on this forum are inhumane (by definition)
Seriously, I wish I did have time to sit in front of a computer and talk dogs.
If any person would email me I will email them my book, "The Only Way To Humanely Train Your Dog" for free.
I love dogs more than any person here and have professionally worked them as a K-9 officer for more years than some of you have been living. I have been so misrepresented on this forum (to the point of libel) that I can only stand in wonderment as people decide on an issue without hearing both sides of a story. It is very foolish to do so...
Again, got to go to work folks. My work entails me to take my dog and to patrol with him and yes; to be paid for doing so. Ah yes, a true working dog. How many of you here are PAID by several clients to actually patrol with your dog? I am not talking about my students (in the hundreds) but I am talking about actually working your dog on the street?
Not a one of you...
Again, do contact me individually and personally and I will be the kindest, most sincere man you ever met. This way we can communicate to each other face to face, or over the phone, or email...And then you will see that indeed, I train dogs humanely.

I have no desire to patrol with my dogs. I do compete a lot in agility and some in obedience. Do you really have clients hit dogs? I don't want to take it private, as people will read this thread in the future, and I feel your answers are important to have on it.

Do your students compete in anything, obed, agility, schutzhund etc? Have you? Are you aware that there police and military trainers switching to positive methods (some have been using them with other species for the last 50 years)?

Just honest curiosity..

Dear Dekka,
Why will you not speak to me in private?
Then you can tell everyone what we talked about...

I wasn't aware that there was a need for JRT's on patrol, so even if you wanted to, I doubt you'd find many takers. Just like adojrts is talking about doing French Ring with a JRT. An admirable idea, but a JRT doesn't have one of the most important things a dog needs to do an activity like that- size. Drive, intensity, courage, willingness to fight- the JRT can have all of that, but when the requirement is to bring a man down, you need a little size behind you. The size issue goes even farther, into the real world. A couple of the guys at Gunnar's dog club deal with the international brokers for police dogs. They said that many police agencies are actually going back to using GSDs, when the trend for a while was using the Malinois. The reason is, while both dogs will engage a person by going into a car window, the GSD has the size and strength to pull the suspect out, where the Malinois does not. There is something to be said for a 90lb dog doing the same thing as a 60lb dog. Also, the GSD is more vocal, thereby, more intimidating, than the Malinois, who are not as prone to barking.

I can't speak for Mr Richling, but I'd imagine, with his experience and line of work, that he trains many dogs who are true working dogs. In my opinion, a dog that works for a living trumps any dog that does agility or obedience, no matter how far they advance in competition.

I don't have the time or energy to really get into a post, as I have to go to work. I just have to say that Purdue, you absolutely sicken me. I remember when you were so concerned about Sly when he was living with your neighbor and spending most of the time in a crate and I gave you advice on how to get him to come live with you. I was under the impression he was headed for a better life, not one where he get the sh*t whapped out of him at every turn. You took an undersocialized dog and started beating on him for behaviors that you never bothered to try and correct before hand, or take into a account that he hadn't properly rasied!! YOU HAVE A FSCKING AUSSIE, there is not a reason on this EARTH you should be hitting him, except that you are young and inexperienced and oh so willing so get sucked into this jackhole's justification of abuse. God, even the old school Kohler style trainer I first apprenticed under would wet her pants in disbelief at what you are doing to your PET DOG. And she trains in Schutz, SAR, competes in agility, conformation, obedience and everything else. She trained the military dogs down at Lackland Airforce Base for fsck's sake...can your caveman of a trainer claim anything like that? NO...because he's too afraid to take his dogs around his peers and their "pansy" competitions, because he knows exactly what is going to get said about him and he's right.

I almost ruined my dog by training him the way you're training Sly and it's taken a lot of work to get him back to being happy, excited and willing to work. You are blind to the difference between "I want to work!" and "Please please see my calming, appeasement signals because I DON'T WANT TO GET BEAT!" Do some reading, go to shows, other competitions and frigging talk to other people.

You are not training your dog for military work, Schutz or anything else that could be tossed up as justification for whaling on an Aussie.

Mr Richling..I have nothing to hide on a public forum..do you?

DanL..I agree, I hunt my dogs..as serious to the dog as patrolling. But he is taking pet owners and training dogs. As you pointed out not all dogs are suitable to work in this way, so I am wondering if he methods then are ONLY suitable to produce a 'police' dog, or can his clients do anything else?. Mr Richling asked us if we patrolled with our dogs, so I was answering. I do know there are SAR JRTs.
