SOCIALIZATION

In the life of every very young canine there is a brief period for new experiences, adventures, and exploration. During this time curiosity reins supreme. New experiences and new objects are tolerated without concern or fear. It is logical for the very young canine to explore it's surroundings without fear while they are still under the close care and protection of Mom and other pack members. Pups without fear can more readily learn about their world and prepare for their future life. This period is very brief. Age and maturity comes in just a few weeks or months. Then the pup wanders farther afield to explore while, meantime, caution and suspicion of new situations and objects develop in the pup's mind. All canines have this inherited trait...from the ancient ancestors. Each dog has this ability depending on it's breed, personality and temperament. Beyond the brief "fearless" state, puppies meet all new encounters with cautious fear and suspicion.

The well-adjusted dog comes from the puppy who's owner found endless new experiences and arranged enjoyable encounters throughout the dog's puppy hood. Only dogs such as this can cope with every situation in life without fear. Socialization importance to a pup's life cannot be stressed too much. It is the most important process in a puppy's life. How well the owner does or doesn't perform the socialization endeavor will reflect directly on the future character of the pup. Socialized puppies are happy, outgoing, stable, friendly and able to handle stress. Under-socialized puppies become shy, fearful, suspicious, mentally and emotionally unhealthy, fear-aggressive, possibly dangerous and can not live a happy, full life or handle any stress.

Socialization cannot be neglected. It is as important as food, water, and medical care in maintaining a puppy's well-being. Time flies fast, life is busy, but the owner must set aside special time for the pup. Make a schedule for your puppy and maintain it!! Socialization is the formation of a well-balanced, happy, and friendly adult dog.
