I didn't read this whole thread,only parts of it,but I am not a fan of PETA at all.I am vegetarian,but when I mention that I am always asked "so you support PETA?"...that frustrates me,because no,I do NOT support PETA.
I am vegetarian,because I have problems with factory farming/slaughterhouses,but I have no problems with small,independant farming and I really do not care if other people eat meat or not.But because I do not agree with big factory farms,that does not mean I support PETA.
PETA are hypocrites,liars,power hungry and crazy.
They even scammed my cousin.She used to be into them and sent them money for a shirt or something.Well months passed and she never got the merchandise or her money back.She started calling/emailing them,but they wouldn't answer.She tried for awhile,but they just would not get back to her...so she gave up.I do not think she supports them anymore,at least I hope not.I haven't talked to her in some time.

An unfortunate, VERY unfortunate, side effect of PETA and the other "animal rights" people is that they make other people who wish to make life better for animals look like maniacs. They've stolen so much of the press and attention that those of us "animal welfare" people who want say, reforms on factory farms, or sensible animal control laws are immediately either assumed to support whatever PETA wants (if dealing with legislators) or to be totally insane, like PETA (most of the rest of the world).
They've tarred us with their brush, and thus made it much harder to make a real difference for animals. If you open your mouth and say "I think that's cruel and there has to be a better way . . . you are immediately assumed to be a maniac, if not a possible terrorist . . .
Then there's the sucking people in. I'm the unoffical head of the unoffical "I HATE PETA" club at my firm. What do I do? As a known animal lover, when the topic comes up, I inform people giving money to HSUS and PETA (or worse doing pro bono fwork or them) exactly what they are supporting. I've made several converts.
For that matter, PETA is the reason the ABA no longer gives full credit for "animal" pro bono . . . thus making it harder for lawyers wanting to work with the welfare people . . . again, grouping us with the loonies.
