i understand he gets some criticism from the BC peeps, as evidenced by his wikipedia page. i just read The Dogs of Bedlam Farm and really enjoyed it, so I know about his giving away Homer to a neighbor's family, but don't know anything about his putting a pet down. i've got Katz on Dogs on the shelf, waiting to be read, but i'd be interested in hearing more about Mr. Katz from anyone on here. here's the part of the wiki article:

"Katz's books about dogs have received favorable reviews in the literary press,[11] but have been met with a hostile reaction in segments of the border collie community. Notable examples of this criticism have included Donald McCaig's review of The Dogs of Bedlam Farm in The Bark magazine[12] and Penny Tose's review of Katz on Dogs in The American Border Collie magazine,[13] as well as comments on various Internet forums such as the BC Boards[14] and the Working Stockdog Forum.[15] Critics have faulted Katz for a fundamental lack of understanding of the dogs and their work and for offering misguided training advice while professing an expertise that he in fact lacks.[16]. Katz has claimed to enjoy "riling the border collie snobs,"[17] but criticism of the author intensified after he gave away his second border collie and had the first put down for behavioral problems.[18]"

I read "The Dogs of Bedlam Farm" I saw it in Book-A-Million and thought it loooked really good!

It's beyond hilarious. But he's not knoledgable at all about the BC breed. As you have in your post, the BC Boards are a good place to look for good imformative posts on him. Oh, and he's against rescue since Orson is oldest BC and PTS Orson in another of his books.

At a purely enjoyment level, I liked his books. He does have a good hand at description. But he really should stick to the Labs...he doesn't understand BC's and is seemingly caught up in the romance of the breed. He calls his working girl Rose "the lonliest dog" because of her intense working drive, when the fact that she gets to seriously work sheep probably makes her one of the happiest dogs alive. He strikes me as the type that loves the deep, adoring gazes of a dog who can't bear to be apart from their master...much like his first two Labs. Orson was like that to a degree.

Lizmo, do you mean Orson (formerly Devon)? He had a Homer, but Homer was the one he rehomed to his neighbor after Orson and Rose ganged up on him all the time.

Isn't it "A Good Dog" where he puts Orson down? A friend lent it to me on CD and I listened to it. I think that one was about Orson.

I will admit, it is the only one of his books I've 'read', but I think the guy is an idiot. Orson gave him every possible sign that issues were developing, and yet he did nothing about it until people got bit...and then he euthanized.

I remember someone once posting a link to some article where he talked about people who do rescue as bleeding heart woman trying to make themselves feel better, or something like that. Charming fellow.

I have no respect for him, and will not give him any of my money by purchasing his books.

As one of those "BC peeps", I think the man is a flaming IDIOT and I have a hard time enjoying his books.
