Our 8 month old Tron was laying on my husband and fell asleep. About 15 minutes later my husband got up and realized there was a wet spot on his shorts. He said it smelled like poop. He checked Tron and he said that it's wet around his butt. Is this normal?

Well the general consensus of anal glands is they smell like very, very rotten fish, but they do smell different to some people. And they are....well part of poop in a round about way so that's certainly not out of the spectrum of possible smells I'd associate with them.

There's one girl in our clinic who says they smell 'sickeningly sweet' so....yah.

Anyhow, if it happens again try putting him outside and see if he has to go to the bathroom.

Anal glands.
The only time mine has expressed theres is when they were stressed and once super excited. It's like a poop/blood/metallic/fish smell.

I didn't think it was possible, but you described them perfectly lol

There are some animals that will express for no good reason. Gavorche will occasionally express his on my parents couch (ONLY when he's sitting in one particular spot, next to my mom...but then again, he also peed on my mom the first time he saw her, so maybe he just has something against her :rofl1: )

Well you could express them yourselves, but if it's a puppy it may be a bit too small to...get in there. Sometimes you can express them externally.

If you don't know how, go to the vets and they can show you.

You can add fiber in the form of canned pumpkin to your dog's diet, in an attempt to bulk up the stool and encourage them to express when he poops, like they're supposed to.

I'll try the pumpkin thing but I guess I'm going to have to take him to the vet so they can show me what to do. This stinks!! Literally:)

Yup, they are none too pleasant at all.

Fun fact about anal glands: it's thought that canids, at one time, could spray the contents of the sacs much like a skunk does. Eventually they lost that ability (thank god) and it just became a marking of territory type of thing, which is why they're expressed during BM. In domestic dogs they're worthless except for smelling up the joint (though technically a good thing for identification of dogs with one another) and getting ruptured.

You guys were right. It was his glands and I will have to express them whenever I see that it's bothering him. Not looking forward to it!! At least it's nothing life threatening:)
