First, some background. We have always struggled to keep weight on Tres, our standard poodle. We had finally got him stabilized (still on the thin side, but much better) after switching foods and increasing the amount. We went on vacation, and decided to board our dogs at the vet thinking that they would be safest there in case of an emergency. When we picked them up on Thursday, Tres was covered in pee and looked pretty wild-eyed. When I asked why he was soaking in his pee, the receptionist looked at me and said "When dogs are boarded, they don't stay out of their pee". They brought the other two out, and they were clean as could be. They then told me that they didn't take the boys outside ONCE to pee!!!!

They would put the two little ones in an indoor run a few times a day to go potty, and Tres had to go in his run and they would clean it up twice a day. I asked how they had behaved and they told me that Tres liked to "jump" in his kennel. Now, Tres is always PERFECTLY calm in his crate. He is still young, so he can be rambunctious, but the poor guy had to be stressed to the max to be "jumping". He hadn't gotten a hair cut before we left, so I couldn't see how skinny he had become in just one week.

We got him home and bathed him, and I had to shave him pretty short to get all of the smell out. I then realized that he is skin and bones. I am in disbelief at how much weight he lost while we were gone. It is absolutely unbelievable. So I upped his food intake again, and thought we were on track.

Then, this morning, he has watery stools. I can't rest his tract because of his weight, but I don't want to keep feeding him and keep the diarrhea going! What should I do?????

I would LOVE to kill that clinic!!!!!

(Oh, and I was told that they would be taken outside to potty during the day. I thought that my boys would be fine as they have never had problems with going in their crates while we are at work!)

Try feeding him some plain canned pumpkin to see if it helps settle his stomach. If he's not feeling better, do you have another vet you can bring him to for a checkup. I'm wondering if you can report your vet to someone to report the conditions. This is not acceptable.

Instead of his normal diet try some boiled chicken with rice to soothe his stomach along with the pumpkin. Getting the diarrhea under control is more important han worrying about a another pound or two, because dehydration could make his condition much worse especially if he is underweight. If the runs don't stop you can use pepto bismal, but I would talk to another vet to rule out any other medical conditions besides stress that could be causing the problem.
