After the previous (not so great) rescue group that I volunteered with fizzled away, I've been looking to get back into rescue work. I'm now stuck with the decision of where to volunteer. If I'm going to work with a rescue, I'm looking for one that is well established and just a good place overall. After attending a few adoption events with one or two of these, they appear to be great places, but I just don't feel like I'm making that big of a difference individually. I don't have the time to spend more than a day a week doing things with the group, and with most of these organizations, it takes more than that to make an individual impact. That leads me to my next choice.
One thing that I've considered is finding a shelter that looks like they really need the help. Unfortunately, these seem to be those shelters that are high kill and don't seem to be the happiest places. They are the ones who list their animals with numbers instead of names on petfinder, have horrible (or no) pictures, and no bios at all. This would be a good job for me because I would be able to do quite a bit of work from home. Also, I'm into photography, and I think I might actually be able to make a difference in some of these dogs' lives, but I've never volunteered with a kill shelter before, and I'm unsure of how hard it is to handle. Does anyone have experience with working in this type of environment?
I'm certainly not new at all to rescue work - I've fostered, worked at events, done website updating, and photography - but I've never worked at a kill shelter. I'm just hoping to hear some other experiences. Thanks.
