The past couple of days have been horrible! Cookie has been so constipated that she was in agony. I couldn't figure out why until family members started confessing that they gave her people food for "treats" everytime my back was turned on Christmas Eve & Christmas.

I had specifically asked them not to feed her any people food because of her feeding schedule, etc. Schedule, routine & no sudden food changes are very important when house-breaking, etc. And some people food can be very bad for dogs, etc. You all know the drill.

Well, I guess they thought I was just being mean because all of them confessed to giving her all sorts of things, from marshmallows, to ham & chunks of cheese! Of course I'm sure she loved every bite, but come on!

Apparently they gave her quite a bit, because she hardly touched her regular food both of those days. I was beginning to think she was getting sick!

Sunday, she didn't "go" at all, and by yesterday, she was trying and couldn't and crying in pain. I was so afraid she had a blockage and called our vet. I had forgotten that he was out of town for the holidays. Then I remembered that we used to give our daughter warm water with a little karo syrup when she had similar problems (per doctor's orders).

If this hadn't worked, I would have had to find an emergency vet to see her, but decided to give this a shot first.

It worked! Thank goodness! Cookie had an almost normal day today and is feeling much better.

I know my family didn't mean any harm, but I hope they will listen from now on.

I'm glad Cookie is feeling better. For future reference, canned pumpkin works "both ways"- for direhhea and constipation. Just make sure you're using canned pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling. :) Oh, and it doesn'rt hurt to just flat out lie to your family and tell them people food will make Cookie sick (as in throwing up). We had to do that when our dil's parents came for Thanksgiving. Her dad has a reputation for feeding everything to their dogs. When dinner was over, I gave him a small piece of turkey and said he could give that to the dog. ;)
