For anyone who is thinking about using clicker training, or is tyring to use clicker traing with their dog but unsure of How to train your dog what the clicker means, here are a few tips that should hopefully help out.

When starting with clicker training, your dog needs to be acquainted with the sound of the clicker. This means that he/she needs to associate that the sound of the clicker = a treat/reward. This is generally done through a process called "Charging the clicker or conditioning the clicker".

If you start this process off when your dog is hungry (eg.before a meal), you will find that he/she will be a lot more responsive to the treats & clicker, and therefore make 'Charging the clicker' easier to do.

There are a number of treats you can use with your dog when clicker training. The most popular treat i've found are food based treats. Chicken and dried liver work very well. Toys and physical praise can work well too.

There are a few ways you can "Charge the clicker". An easy way is to give your dog a treat, and as you do, press the clicker. If you repeat this process, you'll find that your dog will associate positive rewards with the sound the clicker makes.

After you've trained what the clicker means, Its now just a matter or using the clicker as a training tool to shape the behavior you are wanting.

I hope this help,s & if anyone else has some tips they would like to include, please feel free to share. :)
