After spending some cuddle time yesterday with Brawt I noticed that the top of his ears (the point) and on each side of that (the side of his head and ear) he is losing hair. He doesn't have bald spots but it is thinner. Over the past few months he has had spots that would come and go on his chest and inside of his thigh area. The would show up one day and be gone the next. He never scratched, licked or messed with them. I'm now wondering if this is tied together.

Could this be because he isn't getting enough vitamins/nutrients in his diet? Stress?

He has an appointment to go in for his yearly shots in a couple weeks. Do you think this could wait until then or does this need to be addressed ASAP?

Thanks.

I have noticed that this is a common thing with dachshunds, not exactly sure why. But many, many doxies I know have completely bald ears, or at least the top half of the ear near the head is bald or very, very thin. Seems to be more common on black&tans, but I have seen it on reds as well...though only smooths in both cases, Longhairs don't seem to be affected in my experience.

I think it can wait, personally.

Really? I had dachshunds my entire life growing up and never had that problem. I can't say where the other dachshunds I've seen have had it (strange dogs at the park or whatever). My black and tan doesn't have it -- it's my red male. I know that dilute colors are prone to pattern baldness but his color is standard -- this is what has me thinking....

I'll make sure the vet knows and we will see what happens. Hopefully it isn't much of anything and something simple with fix the problem.

It might be that he's stressed out from all the females in the house. Just a guess.

i've had ares lose hair on the tips of his ears. we go to a holistic vet, and she thought it was...oh, i'm probably going to get this a bit off from what she said...but basically, it's a circulation problem, not serious though. but it's that the blood isn't flowing at the tips of the ears the way it should...kind of a chinese medicine school of thought. she put him on some chinese herbs and the hair grew back right away.
