Well you could go the extra bit with Snell if you so desired but I've heard some people say the extra 'hardness' (not really the right term as it's not physical strength responsible for the protection) is counter to the purpose. But all the same yes, any DOT helmet has met at least the minimum requisites.
But they'll DOT a lot of worthless helmets, like half-helmets that do nothing for the face, or 3/4 helmets that leave your chin ready to be jounced up into your skull, so you can't always rely on it.
But a Scorpion (at least the EXO-700s) are only about $200 and offer a great degree of protection. I've seen pictures where the helmet was trashed and all the rider took was a bruise to the head. That's what the helmet is supposed to do, take all the hard stuff. Course I've seen like pictures with Shoei or Arai but I'm not sure if the extra money is in extra protection, style, brand, or features (ventilation, comfort). I'm betting it's more to the latter bits, though.

Exactly. I've seen Scorpions in person, and they've very nice and well made. Visible quality. They're easily on par with ICON, and I think it's fair to say that the difference in price between them and Shoei / Arai is almost exclusively a status symbol thing.
Now, Scorpion doesn't offer much in way of options for women, which is another part of my conundrum. Like I said, I have yet to see an AFX in person, but I'll know once I hold and inspect one whether or not I'll put it on my melon. Right now, I'm using an HJC, but I'm not very fond of it at all. Not fond of the brand, period.

oh i forgot to add - i've been riding motocross for, oh, five years now?
My helmets have been in the $80-100 range, and they have been through quite a bit, quite a bit indeed... and I've never had a concussion or other head injury. Ended up in quite a few trees, ravines, and gravel pits, sliding across rocks, cement, hard pack and timber... but my head has never had injury. And I ride HARD. I think if you WANT to pay a lot of $$$ for a helmet, keep in mind, you're mostly paying for the brand name. Just make it dot and snell certified and you should be hunky dory.
