Sometimes when I am outside late at night and turn the spot lights (on the deck) on, an animal starts making the weirdest noise. The sound is coming from the woods. It's not a bark! The best way that I can describe it is to say that it sounds more like a big (30-40 pound) cat growling/roaring. I've never heard of a bobcat in Ohio but that is the first thing that came to my mind. Any ideas as to what this might be? It doesn't sound like a coon. Could it be a fox that doesn't like me shining the light at it's den? I don't know what kind of noise a fox makes. As my dogs go to that portion of the fence and bark the noise gets louder and more frequent, like a warning. I'm stumped.

My first thought would be a Mountain Lion, do you guys have those?

Scary, maybe an escaped lion/tiger/jag from the zoo? That would actually be kind cool :)

In a way, it sorta sounds like a SMALL mountian lion. We definately don't have any of those around here though. I'm going to have to rule that one out :)

Bobcats are definitely found in Ohio.
"There’s a small but growing population in Ohio, Illinois and Indiana.”
Also:

Although they usually remain quiet, bobcats can make all kinds of sounds, including hisses and growls, yowls and purrs, mews, gurgles and wah-wah calls. During mating season, they’re quite noisy, making loud yowls and howls and meows called caterwauling. These sounds can be heard a mile away.

They're fiesty animals. Even though they are "small", we had one that used to roam our property and I wouldn't let my dane herd out at night because of her. She had no qualms about rushing one of my dogs. We had to be very cautious about walking through the woods.

Foxes make different sounds, but their main bark sounds like a small dog...The barking is really fast also...

It does sound like a Bobcat. Have you ever heard it make a sound that sounds like a baby crying? Bobcat's are notorious for making that sound around here...
