This is referring to a dog peeing on a human's bed.

My Pinky did that, we cought her in the act and she got in big trouble, I held her by the scruff and told her what a bad girl she was, then I crated her for 2 hours, let her out and would not give her any attention for another hour, she never did it again.

I don't think scruffing really teaches anything and I don't believe in physically punishing a dog, just my opinion, It could actually tech your dog to hide when he pees, but he will still go in the house. Also I don't think you should use the crate as punishment because the dog will end up hating the crate. While your dog is being house broken you should not leave him unattended (that's what the crate is for) Put a gate up or close the door to your room so that he at least will not go on your bed if you can't stop the peeing in time. You should learn the signs that he is gonna pee so that when he starts showing them (sniffing, circling, looking very preoccupied with the floor or what ever your dog may do) you can distract him with a treat and take him out to go to the bathroom then give him treats and praise. Dogs don't really have the time concept so by ignoring your dog hours after the incident he has no idea why you are doing it. Work on these thing and what the other members say and you will have a better house breaking experience.

Yup after the deed is done it's to late to punish ( not that you should). Your best bet is to crate her at night and not let her up on the bed for now. Crates are ok for 2 min time outs to let a dog calm down in his safe place when he's to hyper but shouldn't be used for a punishment that long.

Positive reinforcement is always the best way to teach your dog so if it happens again just ignore it and try and take her out more often. Any time your dog pees in the house it is your fault for not bringing her up often enough, every time duke had an accident I just reminded myself bad me and took him up more often.

Grabbing and holding the scruff of the neck is not training, just a bad choice of disipline for a dog. And for the "time out" the dog will never even know why or understand the cause and effect of this. This is not a human child that will understand a "time out".

The only one to blame for her peeing on your bed is yourself.... Not the dog. :)

It would have made more sense to put yourself on time out or whack yourself with a newspaper. It was YOUR fault. Period.

Crate training is wonderful for housetraining, a dog should not look at it as "punishment." A dog is not human, the sooner you realize that and understand it, the better for Pinky. The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson is a wonderful book and the site cickersolutions.com has good articles on positive training.

OP, do you even know how old this dog is?

What's done is done, but I would say that kind of behavior is a result of the dog having too much control and freedom too soon.

The way I was taught to deal with potty training issues is to gradually give more freedom as the dog progresses, and until then, the dog should not ever be unsupervised. I would say that you need to cut down on the dog's unsupervised time . . .

But what everyone else said is right, once it's done, the dog has no idea why they are being punished or crated, the good news is that now you know and you can deal with it in a better way.

And BRAVO to you for trying to find a better and more appropriate way to deal with the problem.
