I'd avoid the hognose unless you've got access to an unlimited supply of toads. I had several and we hunted for toads every weekend. That was many years ago and in an area overrun with toads - probably not something you see anymore. :(

The drawbacks with the Ball Python is that they are a shy snake and more prone to stop eating if their environment is not perfect for them. Most species of boa and other pythons like the carpet, blood and burmese seem to be more outgoing.

I second the corn snake. Other smaller snakes I recommend are the small boas (sand for example) or a milk snake. They are nice small, docile snakes.

I have bred, hatched and raised a clutch of 30 eggs from my Burmese python about 15 yrs ago. Those little buggers came out of the egg biting!

Reticulated pythons are gorgeous, but known to be temperamental as well.

I'd also recommend a corn over a ball python as a first snake. Every year between oct and jan my ball stops eating. Doesn't matter what the temps are set at, or humidity, his internal clock says it's time to fast. He cuts back to eating maybe every three weeks. Which I find to be very irritating. He doesn't lose much weight, but it's harder getting it back on every year. He is also prone to tempermental issues if hungry. Well fed he's fine, but hungry, look out.

My corns on the other hand have never even threatened to bite, even when I feel I was probably being a bit irritating. The other upside of corns is most of them will eat almost anything. They've been bred in captivity for so many generations that you rarely get one who refuses food, while getting a ball to start eating after stress can be tricky.

Also keep in mind snakes are very big escape artists. When I worked at a pet store we routinely had to play find the snake because some one left a cage unloacked. The best days were when all 9 ball pythons were loose, and some of them weren't too friendly.

Pics of my snakes.

a wire cage isnt good because it would let out heat, to add more humidity you just add a bigger water bowl

corn snakes are really good first snakes, ball pythons are good too but are bigger and shy.

btw you wouldnt be able to keep it with your lizards

i was going to get a snake but mother wont let me lol
