I have read instructions for several other heart worm preventatives that state to break the treatment into pieces before giving however I could find no such instruction on Sentinel. Is there any reason why breaking in half before giving would be harmful? Seems the coating my help prevent stomach irritation similar to a coated aspirin but I want to be sure my dogs are receiving total benefit.

Never heard of any heartworm pill needing to be broken before given, unless it's to half the dosage. And in that case it should be done only if they're scored.

Instruction from Hearguard & Tri Heart Plus - Most dogs like the taste and will accept the chewable like a treat. The chewable should be administered in a manner that encourages the dog to chew, rather than to swallow without chewing. Heartgard Plus Chewables (or Tri Heart Plus ) may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole.

I would think that since Sentinal is not considered a chewable then swallowing whole is ok.

That's cuz its a chewable tablet, and needs to be chewed. The Sentinal just needs to be swallowed.
