I have a puppy I think I'm going to end up keeping. Our little Bossman v D is a great schh prospect, and I can't bring myself to let him go to a "pet" home. It frustrates me so badly, this boy has so much potential, he's driven, hyper, attentive and has a dominant streak, everything he needs to do schh mentally, but on top of everything else he's got good structure too. I'm thinking I may end up keeping him and training him up for K9 and donating him to a PD. I'm so frustrated about this. I have no shortage of potential homes for him, I just can't let him be a pet when he's got so much potential. I've got two pups in 'casual' schh homes, but I'll believe that they're going to do it when I actually see the titles.

I wish I still lived in Kansas where schh is actually popular, it seems like the only people around here who even know what it is are big name trainers who don't need another pup.

I'm sorry, it just breaks my heart that I can't find a worthy home for this boy. I just want him to have the chance to become what he has the potential to be. He could be my superstar if he had the right opportunities.

Sorry, just venting. I know it's kinda rambling.

I'd say ship him to me, but I'm at my limit and not set up for a Sch-prospect pup. :p :D

Good luck with him!

I have to say kudos to you for not placing a puppy in the wrong home. That is the reason why so many dogs end up in shelters or rehomed a zillion times. Why dont you keep him for yourself? Or I'll take him :p. You can never have enough GSD's :D.

Thanks. :)

Assuming I can't find a schh home, I'm very likely going to keep him for about a year, give him his basic training, then try to place him with a police department to be a canine. If I can't find him a good schh home, I'm sure a K9 Officer will be able to handle him. Being an MP, I could donate him to be a MWD, but I don't like how the military processes their dogs.

As for just keeping him to be my boy, I'm not really set up to keep a third dog. I could if I had to, and I will if I need to, but if I had a choice, it's not something I would want to do right now. Just a preference, that's all; and believe me, I've given it serious thought. This is a good boy!

ps- I talk like I've already shipped off the other pups, they're only five weeks, but they are paid for. I still have them though.

I think that would be a great thing to do, donating him to the police. I'm not a fan of military K9 procedures as well. Although they do serve a valuable purpose. When I bred I would like to donate to the police as well. Also, many Schutzhund people want a young dog not a little 8 week old pup. If you begin with basic imprinting now (drive work, scent boxes, basic OB) you could probably find a suitable home for him, once his true personality starts to come out. :)

Speaking from experience AMEN!
My dogs littermate is in the process of being rehomed. She went after the Chihuahua almost blinding it with an eye injury so they decided to rehome the shepherd not the more adoptable Chihuahua. This is the 2nd dog in the litter to be rehomed. The guy never should have bred his dogs, he claims it was an accident and found random homes for his wicked high drive puppies. Had I known then what I know now, I wouldn't have taken her. They have just turned 3 yrs old this month. Gabbers and I are managing just fine but the beginning was sooo rough. Neither of us knew what to do w/all that drive.
Hell we're still not sure. Anyhow Kudo's and good luck!
