Aside from raw bones, what other teeth-cleaning items are out there in retail stores (eg. kong, nylabones, rawhides, etc.) that are effective and most importantly SAFE?

I've been scared of the whole Greenies issue and am carefully watching my dog eat them (I still have like half a bag of it left). He chews them pretty well, I think, but after he's done this bag I'm not going to buy them anymore just to ease my own worries.

So now I need to find something new I can buy him that he'll enjoy chewing and is safe. He likes stuff that is edible or has compartments for treats.

Any ideas?

Kong and nylabones are probably the best out of those you listed, but you should always watch to make sure your dog can't chew them up anyway. They come in different strengths. I've seen two dogs, one lab and one lhasa mix chew through a red kong in under a minute. The black ones hold up. Same with the 'normal' strength Nylabones...they could both chew those up in a short amount of time, but the "for powerful chewers" ones stay intact.
