Our older yorkie fellow seems to be losing weight fast. We began to notice a slight weight loss a week or so ago and then as of this weekend it seems to be alot. I'm guessing he has gone from 10lbs. to 5 lbs... He is eating the same, drinking the same and acting the same. We do have a vet appt. scheduled for Saturday a.m. but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

Thanks so much

How old is your yorkie?

And are you SURE that he went from 10 to 5 pounds? And that he is eating normal? Do you have another dog that could be eating his food?

I would be concerned about kidney disease. Time for a vet visit and some bloodwork!

Good luck and I hope your dog is okay...

Ditto...I would want to check both kidney and liver levels and also rule out Diabetes...It could be any of a multitude of things...best to get a good vet to start the process of elimination...I'd be curious to know if there is any loose stool because there seems to be some malabsorbtion issues if the dog is still eating and drinking normal amounts...best of luck.

That can be a sign of cancer also.....Happened with the 2 dogs I've lost to cancer.....

They didn't loose the weight that quickly though, it was over a couple of months...

Thanks guys.. Well he definitely is eating the same, we watch during both meals to make sure and have been since we've noticed the loss. His stools are normal but not as much. As far as 10lbs to 5lbs, I could be wrong on that, it just seems like he now weighs what are youngest yorkie girl does. In regards to his age, well that is a mystery. YOu see we adopted him 2 years ago along with another yorkie fellow and the paperwork they gave us was very confusing. One showed him being born in 1995 which would make him 11 and the other showed 1997 which would make him 9. Personally, I'm thinking he is 11 or older. Supposedly, an older women passed away who had 18 dogs and the 2 we adopted were a part of those 18 and all the paperwork was screwed up.
Thanks so much for all your thoughts, I'm so scared to take him to the vet for fear of what they are going to tell me, but I know I've got to do it. I'll hopefully no more Saturday and will keep you up to date. Please keep us in your prayers, I've never owned a pet before and in the last 2 years we've managed to adopt 4 dogs and they are such a big part of our family.

It could be a lot of things, but one thing that comes into my mine is hyperthyroidism. I have a cat with that. Before we found out what he had he would eat and eat and eat and still lose weight and be hungry all the time. Now that he is on his meds he has gained his weight back and his coat looks better than it has looked in a while! I hope your dog has nothing more serious. Good luck at the vet's!

Well Showpug you were correct, it is Kidney failure. I am so heartbroken and just feel like I could throw up. The vet called me tonight after get his blood results today, she said he may only have weeks. Has anyone dealt with this before? Is he in any pain? What can I do? Please help me, I'm so distraught right now.

Thanks - Renee just told me to post in the Health Section on Kidney Failure so you'll probably see this again.
I'm so sad, I feel helpless everytime I look at him.
