Has anyone here heard of the product called Quiet Moments by NaturVet? It's supposed to calm a dog that’s afraid of thunderstorms, traveling or Fireworks. Tilly is deathly afraid of thunderstorms, she'll start shaking and panting before we even know its coming. She'll even hide either under the computer desk or under the blanket covers in our bed. Just the other day, kids in the neighborhood lit up some firecrackers and it upset her for most of the day. We live right in the area where the fireworks from the 4 of July are set and this year will be her first year with us and I don't know how she'll handle it. My other two are accustomed to it, they normally sleep while we're looking at them. I saw this product at our local pet supply store and wondered if it would work to help keep her calm.

Here are the active ingredients:
Chamomile Flower
Passion Flower
Thiamine Mononitrate
Ginger
L-Tryptopan

Anybody else go through this? Any advice?

I've never heard of it, but tried to get all my pups to accept fireworks and noises. You've got a few months to help with the 4th of July. Try to get hold of some fireworks and light one or two as a joyful thing with treats afterwards. Hold Tilly at the same level ( in your arms sitting on ground )as the other dogs... she will startle, but soon should realize no harm will come to her. Glad you're looking ahead ! I had one female that hated storms !! ( We'd all go onto the patio and watch , which helped her ) She was better when we went through a few 4th !!

Thanks Grammy! I was thinking doing noise desensitization with Tilly, starting with small noises then moving up slowly to loud ones. Just the noise of clapping hands gets her nervous. I don't think I'd be able to set off fireworks, it's illegal here to do so, though you'd never no this during the 4th with everyone do it. It also scars the peepers out of me, so does firecrackers. lol

Never heard of it. Always want to make sure things are FDA approved, becasue otherwise it's likely they haven't done any testing and can put whatever they want to in it.

Lots of dogs have storm phobia, to start off try giving benadryl to calm her down, 1mg per pound, and can be given up to 3 times daily. If it gets really bad, and that doesn't work, you might talk to your vet. about it and see if he/she thinks a prescription for valium/diazepam would help.

Thank you Boxer*Mom! I'm bringing all the dogs in for the annual check up tomorrow, I'll mention it to the vet.

As for the Quiet Moments calmer, I don't see any indication of it being FDA approved. Just NASC(National Animal Supplement Council) what ever that means? I'm having second thoughts about giving this to her. I'll bring it in to the vets tomorrow and see what he thinks of it.

Looking at the ingredients Giny listed, they all fall under the dietary supplement umbrella which are not required by law to be FDA tested or approved. As far as NASC approved, it's a pretty common advertising ploy with dietary supplements to "make up" official sounding councils and groups to imply that the product has been properly tested. I would research it more.

Several of those listed are commonly advertised as having sedative type effects on humans, but i'm sure you'll probably find somewhere on the label where it says "this product is not designed to prevent or cure any disease" if they even require that for dogs.

I mean it's possible that it could have a beneficial effect, but it's also really possible it's just a way to suck a couple bucks out of your purse.
