Hi. Liberty is about 3 months old now and I'm having some difficulties with her housetraining. First I'm concerned because she will pee in her crate. I thought most dogs won't mess in their crates. We will put her in there when we go somewhere and almost everytime we come back, I let her out and notice that she peed in there. It's a small wire cage. She is doing pretty good peeing outside throughout the day when I take her out. But I'm having trouble getting her to realize that she needs to poop while she's out there too. She'll just pee and run back to the door.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a crate divider? The crate may be small but if she has too much room to move in it she'll just pee in one side and sleep on the other.

That sounds like a good idea. I don't have one. Is it something you can buy? I tried to get a cage that was going to be big enough for her when she's full grown.

You did the right thing buying for full size but while she's small you can get a divider at any pet store locally or online.

About the pooping, you might want to ignore her until she poops and then praise her lavishly and play for a few minutes. The sooner she poops the sooner it's play time! :)

Also, to help the dog poop, you could walk her around for a bit. A Golden Retreiver we were watching wouldn't go poo until you walked her for about four blocks. (I'm guessing since we don't have blocks here. lol probably about 1/8 of a mile, if that much.)

Thanks so much for your replies. I only leave her in there when I leave somewhere. I don't leave her in there longer than maybe 2 or 3 hours. As far as the pooping goes...well I think your right Rose's gal, I have to keep walking her around awhile and try to keep her mind on the task. She wants to chew sticks and chase birds...etc...

Thanks again, Tammy
