I have a 3 year old boxer/pitbull mix. With this being just my opinion and not based on anything medical, I wouldn't leave her outside in the 40's.

I am sure he will be fine, as long as he has lots of water
a dog house should be something you pick up for him ASAP though

don't worry he is a dog not a human baby
and dogs love it outside

4 months is way too young to be outside unnatended for a full day. I would invest in an ex-pen or dog walker as well. Much safer for your puppy.

my pup RIot is 4months old now and although i'm sure he'd LOVE being outside all day (minus the rain today lol even though he thinks rain is fun..) I could never leave him all day out there. I Do know lots of dogs do it, but you do have to be careful with a boxer because they do have a very short coat and get cold easier then other dogs.

A friend of mine has a pure boxer and HAS on occation left him outside in his fenced in "environment' which consisted of a huge water bucket for him, a dog house, huge dog bed and blanket plus toys. He stayed in there until he figured out how to escape lol but in the winter and cold weather he wasn't left out there.

I'd be more scared of someone stealing my dog, or it getting out of the yard.

I don't like blankets, it actually holds moisture and makes a dog feel damp. I don't think any dog should be outside without having covered protection...even if it's only for an hour or two. it's just nice for a dog to have the option of not having to just lay out in the open. I also think 40 is a bit chilly (with no protection) IF you HAD to have a dog house, it would be better to put tons of straw inside..it wicks away moisture. IF you do opt for a doghouse, it can't be too big or the dog won't stay warm....and this is all said thinking of temps still in the 50's. cold weather is too harsh for a boxer, just my opinion. :)
