Do a search in this forum; it's been brought up many tiems.

Not trying to be rude, but it always leads to very heated discussions about the same things over and over and we have enough of those threads already.

DISCLAIMER *** I am not trying to start an argument and I would apreciate it if everyone not attack me for stating my opinion***

I think they are great training tools if used properly. I used one for my dog and it solved many problems and it IS possible to wean them off the prong.

A prong can be used (I used one on my dog), but there are also other options out there. Do a search on leash pulling and see what you find. Pick the method that you are most comfortable with.

I've been watching the prong collar threads with interest. Can someone tell me if in the USA they are allowed in all states? Over here in Australia, I live in the state of Victoria. This is the only state that the prong collars are illegal.

Go figure. I've never used one, and to be honest have never needed one, but I would never judge anyone that does. To each their own, and if you've found something that works, then thats the something for you.

Just wondered if they illegal in any parts of your countries

Thanks

Carolyn :)

They are a godsend! Stops pulling immediately if used properly. You can generally buy little plastic nubs that fit over the "prong" bits to make it even more comfortable.

Prongs aren't illegal in any states here, as far as I know. They do work well when used properly, but I don't think they should be the first step. And I also don't think that *everyone* should use one. You should only use what you're comfortable with (and that goes with any training method).

laney's obedience teacher suggested using a prong collar on her because she pulls ALOT... any opinions?
Some of the answers to this thread are pretty defensive about the use of prongs before anyone has a chance to post an alternative option. This does not have to be an attack on anyone who uses them OR on those of us who will not.

Do you have other options as far as obedience schools go? There are so many better options such as the Newtrix easyway collars and no pull harness (front, chest clip) that don't cause pain. Does your instructor spend more time with you on Loose leash training since you are having difficulty with pulling? It does make me wonder about the instructors skills. Not only do I not recommend them but they are not allow in any classes at my school. It's not that I don't recognize the how huge a pulling problem can be for an owner but rather I suggest tools that allow training without pain and then my instructors spend the necessary time to help train loose leash skills.

I dont see a problem with prong collars, but I do see problems with slip. I was looking around on the net and came across statisitcs with tracheal damage, Who ever was doing ths study had 100 dogs over their lifetime, i guess, and 50 used prong and 50 used slip, the 50 that used slip had a way higher % of tracheal damage and the prongs barely had any.

But anyway, my dog, he weights about 55-65 lbs, and me, I only weight a bit over 100 lbs, we got to the point where I couldnt even walk him with out him pulling me terribly. I did some research and bought a prong collar, he is 100% better. Also, when I take him out to go in the yard to do his bussiness, he doesnt pull, he just kind of thinks he's on the prong i guess, I have him on a regular collar, so dont beleive anyone that says you cant wean them off.
