We have a new addition to our home, he is a 12 week old pekepoo puppy. He's a pet store puppy that was bought on impulse by a co-worker (why I'll never know after all the preaching I've done) and then decided it was too much work. Anyway, we are crate training like we did Cocoa and this little s*** just is not getting it. This little guy will go potty (both poop and pee) and then we put him in the crate before we leave for work or anywhere, we come home 3 to 4 hours later (sometimes even 2 hours) when the kids are home and he has constantly for a week pooped and peed in that crate. He has a kidney shaped bed in the crate so he has no room but to lay down, stand up and turn around on the bed (same bed we used with Cocoa). Now I know for a fact on the weekends, he will eat breakfast and do his business within an hour and go all day without pooping again (while were home and he's not crated), so why do you think he is doing it in the crate? Any thoughts or suggestions on fixing this problem, I'm really getting tired of washing up the blanket we put over top of the bed.

He's doing in the crate because he probably never learned it wasn't ok to do it - he probably was taken from his mom to soon to learn it, then got used to pee and poop in his cage at the petstore. So, he probably thinks he has to pee and poop in there, and I would forget the idea of crate training for housebreaking, and maybe get him used to a play pen instead (or a puppy proof room). Also, definitely get rid of the blankets and bedding until he's housebroken, unless you don't mind wasting detergent and water.

But don't give up. Take him outside a lot, praise him when he pees and poops there, don't give him the opportunity of doing in the crate and he won't do it again... If he does it anyway and you manage to catch him, say a firm no and take him outside.

Also, buy some nature's miracle and clean with it, normal cleaners don't get rid of the smell for dogs, so he might think it's just his potty spot.

I'm curious what a pekepoo looks like though... Any pic?

Thanks Fran, I was thinking of a puppy room also and forgetting the crate as well... He is doing great going on the potty pads and outside as well. We've opted for the potty pads for now until he gets a little older which is what we did with Cocoa.. Now she is 95% going outside and 5% using the potty pad. I can't wait until he's a little older and I can hook him up and send him outside with the other 3 but right now he can't get down the stoop to the front yard and when I have him out there with the leash the other 3 wipe him out with theirs when they run by him, it's funny but sad. Anyway, he currently gets lots and lots of praise when he does use the pads or goes outside and I would say he is 95% potty pad trained after just this short time, it's just the darn crate. He sleeps with us at night and if he has to potty he always wakes me up by licking my face or whining, so he's really good about that. It's just the darn crate.

Oh, I forgot to tell you what a pekepoo looks like, well I don't have any pictures but this one has a pekingnese face with soft curly poodle hair. He really is a cutie, he's all black and you can barely see his eyes, he has an underbite and we think he looks like chewbaca from Star Wars, which is why we named him Chewey....

I can't believe that someone bought a puppy and then could give it up!! How were they not attached??

Sounds like pup just hates the crate. Hopefully he'll do better with a playpen.

Well we opted for the puppy room (our bathroom) last night, I put the gate up so I wouldn't have to close the door, put his bed in there, toys and a bowl of water (along with a potty pad). He was in there for 3 hours and didn't pee or poop on the pad and although he cried when we first put him in there he did o.k. I put him in there again today and we'll see how he does. I made sure he both pooped and peed before putting him there and leaving and if at lunch time there are no messes I will know it was the crate. Thanks all.
