Hi, I have a twelve month old border collie and he is very skinny. I asked my vet about it a couple months ago and she said not to worry about because he wasn't "too skinny yet", but I can't get him to gain weight he doesn't eat any kind of dog food I give him. I leave the food dish full on the floor at all times and once and a while he'll eat a little bit.
Yesterday he vomited twice and I wasn't worried because I figured he ate out of the garbage or something (I no there were chicken bones in there). Anyway this morning he had diarrehea with bright red blood in it. There was blood dripped all over the snow in my yard. I checked his paws and mouth and there were no cuts, so he pooped this blood out.
Is this parvo? Should I see the vet right away? Or is this something to do with chicken bones?

PLEASE HELP!!!

I agree with Gempress! An immediate trip to the vet is necessary! I have a feeling those cooked chicken bones are wreaking extremely dangerous havoc with his insides.

Please keep us posted!

Yes get into see a vet asap, do a fecal exam, bring in some of the bloody stool if you can so they can see it too, and if you are worried about parvo do a parvo test too! Has your dog had all it's vaccinations, is it on a monthly heartworm medication with a dewormer? Blood in stool could mean different things; parvo (vomitting & bloody diarrehea), internal parasites (whipworms most likely w/ bloody stool), coccidia, stress, a puncture to the lining of the intestine.

Let us know what happens when you get back from your vet.

OK. I'm back from the vet. I got him tested for parvo and he's all clear, and she said that the chicken bones probably scratched his "insides". She gave him a shot and gave me some antibiotics to give him and told me if the bloody diarrehea (that sounds so gross) doesn't clear up then to bring him in and get a fecal exam done.

Whew!! I can breathe again, I just hope that she's right!!

If she thinks it "scratched" his insides, how does she know that they didnt poke a whole in it??!!

She may just take some extra time to grow into her skin, bones, and frame. As long as she eats, drinks, and seems busy tailed I don't think you have a lot to worry about - some dogs, like some humans - have faster metabolisms than others. It can take some dogs over 2 years to catch up and fill otu completely. :)

Luckily my dogs have never gotten into trash at home ( did years ago in country ! ) I do bag anything I would want them to eat and put way out of reach just in case.
