Both my dogs would prefer to be only dogs, lol. They are very, very bonded to each other despite that though.
I honestly think I'd prefer just one, but given that I like to do a lot of active stuff with them there will probably always be some multiple dog overlap as they get old, etc. Its fun having a few around, but it'd be financially a lot more realistic to accomplish training goals with just one. Like having to stop herding lessons with Lily when I took on Scout for example. Granted I'm really poor, so that doesn't necesarily apply to everyone. Meh it is what it is.
I really wanted a second when I got Scout, but was looking for a purebred dog I could work in sport and not a baggage laden mix. I could never regret it though because I've learned so much more about training and am better prepared for the day when I can have a good working prospect than I otherwise would have been. Took a while for it to come out from behind the baggage, but Scout has real nice drive and work ethic. And of course Lily would literally go all day with mental and physical work if she could, I love that **** dog.
Both get an individual exercise session every day and usually one together as well. They work awesome together on the splitter/longline and individual leashes respectively. They each get individual training sessions with me, etc. And everyone gets snuggle time and they play together all the time. They have a bunch of boyfriends owned by family/friends that they play with too, so despite me not doing dog parks or letting strange dogs come up they get oodles of social interaction.
I don't have a fenced yard, but even when I did I always go out with them and supervise. Even at my mom's place in the boonies, they are never let out by themselves. I enjoy watching them sniff around and be dorks and the high drive dogs can't get in trouble. I call it win win. *shrug*
I can take them everywhere. They've laid under the table at so many restaraunt, bar, coffeehouse, etc. patios. They've been to Montana Shakespeare in the parks multiple times. Outdoor concerts, etc. They are very good girls. I feel pretty lucky to have them.
