OK I am experience in dogs but all my dogs have been intact, the question I am asking which may sound fairly silly really is, My oldest male is intact I have been showing him so this was required, he has never been used at stud, but when my bitches come into season he really does not handle it well, my other male is OK although a little quieter than usual he is younger of the two males. now then I was thinking of retiring the older boy from showing(he is 5 going on 6) now and thought maybe if I got him neutered he would not be as stressed when the girls come into season? has anyone neutered a dog at this age that has been really stressed in the past and has the neutering helped in this area, or is it too late as he has learnt his behaviour? he is also the alpha of the two dogs is it going to effect his status in this department, as I really dont want battles for top position between my boys, I have a real happy pack at the moment and dont want to disrupt it. any view and comments welcome.

As far as neutering a dog at an older age it can be done and gets done alot. It is a very quick simple procedure and would help your dog in this case. However, unless you are showing the other boys I would have them fixed to as well as you bitches. Are they all show and breeding quality to begin with? Good luck whatever you choose!

Yes they are all show quality and do really well, the only reason I am retiring my boy is he has lost interest, and obviously with retiring him I thought I would get him neutered, because its hell when the girls are in season, he constantly wimpers, screams if I go out of sight, I keep them totally seperate from day 1 of the season til the end, at one time I could keep them together but watch them obviously til day 10 then it would hit him. and I would have to seperate, but now as soon as they are in season he starts, I can tell you he is driving me mad lol,

I am still showing the younger boy so he has to stay intact at the moment.

edited to add, just in case this develope into a debate about breeding quality etc as some threads do lol, all my dogs/bitches are health checked and rated as good or excellent (UK rating) for hips they have clear eyes also registered at the UK K.C my bitch got Best Bitch in Breed at Crufts, and the others have all reached high levels in the showring and they the two oldest attained 4 and 5th place in the Working Malamute of the year in the UK the two youngest are also worked and doing very well, I would never breed from a dog that is Not up to par (the older one in this discussion has IMO weak pasterns) hence him not being used at stud. I also judge the breed in the UK.

Well then I say why not get him fixed if you are retiring him :) I think it would be best for him, the bitches, and you :D I think that is the most responsible thing for you to do for him and it is what I would do as well. ;) By the way your dogs look like show quality from your pics! Very handsome and beautiful!

Thanks for the compliment;) I think I am more concerned about the boys and what will happen between them, as it will be the alpha I may be neutering. I would prefer them to stay as they are as far as pack hiarchy, do many neutered dogs STAY alpha do you know?

I have always had two dogs males and both neutered at the same time in the past. I have one intact male and one neutered male now and the neutered male is the "Alpha". He lives up stairs with my parents and I live downstairs with my 15 month old ACD. They get along great but my ACD knows who is boss. I don't think them not having there testicles will make any difference IMO.
