Hi. My husband and I just got Nacho three weeks ago. He's a beautiful 11 week old little chihuahua. Nacho is the first dog that both my husband and I have ever had of our own, and we're trying to learn all that we can to raise a happy friendly well-behaved chihuahua.
So far training has gone pretty well. He loves his crate, rarely has accidents inside, has already learned to leave cords and furniture alone, but we have one problem that I fear may be serious.
Nacho loves to eat EVERYTHING outside. I'm not talking about just chewing on sticks or eating some grass from time to time. When we take him outside he needs constant supervision/distraction or he will eat dirt, plants, grass, bugs, bark, rocks, burrs, EVERYTHING. Even with the supervision he tries to eat things and I find myself constantly telling him "NO" and pulling whatever it was he ate out of his mouth, that is unless upon hearing "no" and seeing me coming he takes off running across the yard and quickly swallows whatever he's eaten. This is a new favorite trick.
I wouldn't care so much except that I know that it's not good for him. We've already had to take him to the vet for bloody stool which the vet informed us was due to the things he was eating in the yard.
While he seems to know "NO" and refrain from doing other things that we are trying to teach him are bad, this is one thing that he completely ignores us on which is so frustrating!!
Please help! I want to be able to take my doggie outside and have fun with him, but this is becoming more trouble than it is worth.
